No matter what industry your company is in, you know that competition is more intense than it’s ever been. That’s why it’s essential to find creative ways to stand out and make a statement in order to differentiate your brand. Using LED video display technology in your corporate headquarters is an innovative and cutting-edge way to stand out. Let’s take a look.

Make a Statement

Eye-catching LED video display tech is a tool that literally provides a new way of looking at things. LED video displays make a statement to your company’s guests, potential clients, and employees, helping to brand you as a creative, innovative company that is on the cutting edge of technology. They are a cost-effective way to give your corporate headquarters a rich, modern look. Best of all, you can use these displays to broadcast product videos, messages from your executive team, social media feeds, news items, and so much more.

Get Creative

If you think LED video means a small screen you hang on the wall, you need to begin thinking outside the box. Today’s LED video display tech gives you the opportunity to create a custom video display that is unique and artistic. LED video displays are available in a huge number of sizes and configurations, so they can be placed in spaces such as corridors, elevators, lobbies, meeting rooms, and sales centers. Literally any open surface can be used to help create an unforgettable experience for your visitors and staff. And the technology has advanced to the point where curved surfaces, strips, columns, floor to ceiling displays – even floor displays and ceiling displays – are all possible. Packing the dynamic punch you desire with an LED display is truly limited only by your imagination.

Success Stories

Here are four examples to get your creativity flowing:

  • Equifax turned to Velocity Productions and PixelFLEX® to create a unique display for the lobby of their world headquarters. The display uses a custom TrueFLEX™ LED flexible video panel formed in a shape that mimics the Atlanta skyline with a 16:9 format screen in the center to play promotional content.
  • Reflect, a full-service provider of digital brand media solutions, created two visually dynamic LED displays using FLEXLite™ NXG technology from PixelFLEX®. The displays were not only designed to make an impact on visiting clients and guests, but to showcase some of Reflect’s creative ideas and solutions as well.
  • ASG, a national integration company, turned to PixelFLEX to help create one of the most unique and dynamic LED video wall solutions for Fortune 500 company, NetApp. The displays are not only trapezoidal, but curved 360 degrees around the center of its Data Visionary Center which is used to show off its capabilities to potential clients.
  • Looking to create an unforgettable space for their executive waiting area in the World Headquarters, Target turned to PixelFLEX. Working closely with their in house integration team throughout the process to complete installation of their first step into digital LED signage with a dynamic wall in its executive visitors lounge.

Did you know that LED video walls are an integral part of TV broadcasts and film? It’s true! The vibrant imagery provided by this advanced technology offers the perfect backdrop on any set. Instead of using old-school projectors or printed backdrops, LED screens make it appear as though cars are actually driving along roads, or can display a realistic snowy winter land that can be seen through a window of a fictional house on a production set.

Another popular way in which LED video walls have made their debut in the television world is as a backdrop for news programs. Today’s newscasting is typically filmed on sophisticated sets, incorporating many video elements. Thus, LED video walls used in these spaces require unique design specifications that are somewhat different from regular LED video walls. Fortunately, LED screens provide design options aplenty.

LED Walls for TV and Film: Special Specifications

  • Pixel pitch is one area that is different for these on-air or on-film scenarios. The closer the camera shot, the closer the pixels need to be for optimal results.
  • Refresh rate is another aspect to consider. It must be fast so that content looks natural and transmits seamlessly.
  • Dual powered displays are a must. Having two power sources prevents content loss due to power issues during broadcast.
  • In a newsroom floor scenario, opt for a non-bezeled display. Bezels break up the connected screens, providing poor aesthetic appeal, making bezel-free LED screens the ideal solution.
  • Cable-free designs that contain wires within an enclosed cabinet not only provide a neat appearance, but are less of a tripping hazard for employees, guests, or on set talent.

 LED Video Floors
In addition to video walls, LED displays can also be integrated as part of the floor in news broadcast or other production settings. Recently, a major new station’s floor was revamped with an LED screen, making it a centerpiece for aerial and push and pull shots in front and above the main news desk. Made possible with a 6mm floor and surface screen, this application is just one unique LED video innovation being implemented in the TV and film realm.

Curved Screens Now Possible
When outfitting a broadcast set or a movie scene, sometimes straight against the wall doesn’t work—the anatomy of the set may make traditional flat or flexible panels an implausible option. Highly adaptable, lightweight curved LED displays can curl, bend, fold and attach to a concave or convex wall, melding seamlessly into a set’s background, making just about any backdrop possible.

LED Video Walls: The New Movie Screen?
Not only are LED screens facilitating better, more believable cinematography and more dynamic news sets, they have also become the cutting-edge go-to medium for theater screens. Part of the movie-going experience since cinema’s early beginnings, LED theater screens remove the antiquated and often erratic projector operation from the equation. The first LED screen debuted at Pacific Theatres in California in April. Industry experts view this as a well-timed move that could attract movie watchers back into the theater. The overall vibrancy and blacker blacks of LED cinema screens are certain to become the preferred source of movie viewing, and may be the enticement necessary to keep fans from waiting until they can watch a movie at home on their own LED televisions.

PixelFLEX Takes Innovation to the Set
As a trend leader of industry leading LED displays, the PixelFLEX team has developed LED screens specifically with TV and film industry applications in mind. The FLEXMod is a lightweight screen that bends and curves, while the LumiFLEX has an LED surface that turns floor space into an amazing visual experience. The average person is bombarded with over 1000 advertisements a day, and in the retail space, the go-to ad has been static signage. But as the years have gone by, there’s a new need for something that can maintain the open, inviting design of a window-front shop while still draw in new customers.

David Venus of PixelFLEX LED sat down on the podcast to tell us how transparent LED display screens are bringing exciting and reusable advertisements to the retail industry, and how the technology is making its mark in other industries through human-centered design.

Live event and production management firm invests in a robust and high-resolution FLEXTour LED video system to meet the changing demands of their clientele

Nashville, TN (6/12/2018) – Specializing in live production and event management, Mountain View Staging (MVS) is an industry leader in creating innovative events focused on the attendee experience. Dedicated to using the latest technology to provide a compelling and memorable platform of audience interactivity, MVS began to look at a LED video option that would allow them to display high-resolution presentations. Also needing a durable and proven technology that could withstand the challenges of live event production, they decided upon a FLEXTour LED video solution from Nashville-based PixelFLEX™.

“We have been in business for 18 years and have been using LED products for the last 10,” began Peter Johnson, Mountain View Staging CEO and Owner. “Since LED now rivals projection, we have switched priorities to the new technology to keep up with changing demand from our clients. It’s all about the increased resolution, contrast, dynamic range and image quality, and the FLEXTour solution checked all the boxes for our priorities.”

A robust, high-definition and curve-able LED video display, FLEXTour is designed specifically for the rigorous demands of live entertainment productions. With its unique rigging capabilities that allow for traditional and off-set configurations, each 500mmx500mm tile is fully front-serviceable and its integrated climbing ladder allows for quick access to displays flown high overhead. Built with the highest standard in components including the new NovaStar A8s receiving card, FLEXTour is completely flicker-free making it one of the premier LED video design solutions available today.

Johnson continued, “Since we mostly work with tech companies, the ability to display software demos with sharp text and graphic elements was a high priority. When you look at the FLEXTour panels and the way they are built, including the design of the locking mechanisms and the LED pixels themselves, it is clearly a superior product. Additionally, the support and service we receive from PixelFLEX is outstanding, and that was the real deal-maker in this decision.”

With the FLEXTour LED video solution now in stock, MVS was ready to deploy the technology in its initial rental application. Asked to produce a compelling three-day client event in California, the design team would be able to create the ideal display for a successful product launch.

“We deployed the FLEXTour panels in a curved setup for the first time at the Event Marketer Summit in support of Opus Agency and their launch of a new mobile app for live streaming video sharing,” explained Johnson. “This was during the annual Ex Awards at the Historic Warfield Theater in San Francisco. The juxtaposition of the brand-new, high-tech FLEXTour LED wall in this old historic theater really made the experience memorable for three separate events back-to-back, including an executive summit, the Ex Awards and the EMS general session the next day.”

In the fast-paced world of live production, MVS believes that an event company is only as good as the people behind it. Applying that same philosophy to its technology partners as well, Johnson is excited to be joining the growing PixelFLEX rental partner network.

“The LED market can be frustrating to get into but PixelFLEX has a quality product at a good price point with the service and support to match,” concluded Johnson. “That is rare to find all those things together in one product from other brands, and there is absolutely no question that we would make the same decision again.”

Digital media solutions provider Reflect creates two retrofitted, window video displays for the San Francisco flagship retail location using FLEXClear transparent LED

Nashville, 5/29/18 – Originally established in 1853, Levi Strauss & Co. is one of the world’s largest apparel companies with 500 stores worldwide, and products available in over 100 countries. At their flagship retail location on Market and 4th Street in San Francisco, the Levi’s® brand managers wanted to heighten the consumer engagement for the 8000-square foot retail space located one of the world’s most highly visited shopping areas. With two large windows looking out onto the busy street, Levi’s worked with their longtime digital partner Reflect, who installed two FLEXClear transparent LED video displays from PixelFLEX.

“Levi’s has been a client of ours for many years dating back to about 2013,” began Brandie Perkins, Senior Account Manager, Reflect. “As a forerunner in the jean industry, they haven’t always played a lot in the digital space, but for their San Francisco Market Street location, they really wanted to make a statement and connect with their customers. Having seen the possibilities of a transparent LED video display at a tradeshow, they asked us if we could implement the technology into their retail design, so we reached out to PixelFLEX about the FLEXClear LED video.”

As a 65-75% transparent LED display, FLEXClear gives designers the ability to offer a truly dynamic experience for consumers. Through its slim, attractive design and its high LED brightness, FLEXClear is perfect for any retail, hotel, shopping mall, or commercial application. With a 100,000-hour LED life and an IP44 rating, FLEXClear installation is quick and easy using spring-loaded Cam Locks for panel interlocking and offers easy back access for any service needs.

Perkins continued, “They wanted to install a big experience and attract consumer attention without impeding the natural light that comes into the store. With the way the store is physically laid out, the natural light is essential to the space, so they loved the idea of being able to put in a transparent LED display. This way they could still get light into the store without blocking any sightlines, and still make an impactful statement through the content on the screen.”

Having been in the space since 2013, the project would entail a retrofit installation for the FLEXClear LED system. Needing to work within the existing infrastructure of the building, it was the design characteristics of the FLEXClear LED which kept the project on schedule through simple installation and programming.

“As far as mounting goes, the design was quite ideal,” added Perkins. “After removing the old tracks lights which were used to light mannequins in the windows, we installed two separate FLEXClear LED video displays, one in each front window, that each included 30 total tiles. They are mounted to a rod hanging from the ceiling, and we are using our ReflectView CMS to push the content we create to the displays. We use a lot of videos and motion graphics, and take advantage of having an unlimited edge on the screens where we can simply display something like the Levi’s logo, and then everywhere else the LED’s are black allowing customers to see into the store.”

As the installation drew to a close, the FLEXClear LED system immediately began to draw attention. While successfully capturing the focus of consumers passing by, the system went a bit further, capturing the attention of the other retailers who were curious to find out about the unique design solution.

“After we got the system up and running, Levi’s informed us that other retailers on Market Street began commenting on the screen and were very interested in how the technology worked,” concluded Perkins. “At this year’s Digital Signage Expo, we had the same experience where various retailers came to our booth to speak about the installation and the potential of FLEXClear LED. We are seeing a lot of excitement about its possibilities because it’s a dynamic and impactful visual display that doesn’t impede light or customer sightlines, all at an affordable price point.”

In most industries, there are norms and standards applied across all manufacturers. Plumbers all use the same size pipes. Car manufacturers must abide by the same standards for fuel mileage, safety, and more. However, that is unfortunately not the case in the world of digital signage. Each respective manufacturer has the freedom to build LED displays to their own desired specifications. The “standards”, therefore, don’t really exist—size and pixel counts are determined by the manufacturer. So, how can digital signage users make a clear comparison? It’s never going to be apples to apples, but it requires looking further than just cabinet size. Instead, the focus should be on the features that matter the most: pixel pitch, matrix, and viewable area.

Pixel Pitch: Defining Resolution

A pixel is a grouping of three LEDs: green, red, and blue. The term pixel pitch describes the measurement between each cluster of pixels known as a diode. This measurement does have a standard, at least in how it’s calculated. It’s the distance between the center of one pixel to the next pixel’s center, and is applicable in both vertical and horizontal applications. For example, if an LED screen has a pixel pitch of 5-mm, its pixels are spaced 5-mm apart. Pixel pitch is normally within a range of .9-mm to 100-mm.

Two screens may be the same size, say 40”, but have different pixel pitches. Lower pixel pitch allows the viewer to stand closer to the screen to read or interact with it, while higher pixel pitch is for screens being viewed from distances further away. So, back to the 40” screen example. If the screen is used as a menu board directly in front of a customer, the pixel pitch should be low, typically sub 3mm in pixel pitch. However, if the screen is 6’ to 8’ away from the audience, a higher pixel pitch can be employed. Keep in mind pixel pitch is subjective to each viewer, and what looks good to one, may or may not look good to another. However, there is a general guide to follow, and that can be seen here.

The Matrix: Viewable Space Matters

Matrix is another digital display measurement, calculated based on the number of pixels on each LED display tile multiplied across the entire display. In a matrix, LEDs are arranged in rows and columns similar to X and Y coordinates. A 2’ x 2’ display with a 30 x 30 matrix translates to 30 pixels per foot multiplied by 2’, totaling 60 pixels by 60 pixels. To find the number of pixels for the entire sign, multiply 60 by 60, for a total of 3,600 pixels. While seemingly simple math, it’s not always accurate as some manufacturers are less exact in their configurations than their counterparts. And while the difference may be unnoticeable, consumers should be aware that not every LED display is going to adhere to a specific set of standards. All of our products pixel resolutions can be found in their respective specification sheets on our site.

The actual size of a screen has very little to do with how crisp the resolution will be. Therefore, when comparing displays, universal module sizes provide for the most exact viewable space determination for screens with different resolutions but identical matrices. Take a 20-mm display and 10-mm display, each with a matrix of 96 x 144. Because it has more space between pixels, the 20-mm would need to be significantly larger; but the 10-mm display could achieve the matrix at a much smaller size with better resolution.

Look for more than size to pick the best screen

When determining what displays are best, placement is key. Interactive kiosks are another category altogether from large backdrop displays. Work with a professional provider to review pixel pitch, matrix, and viewing area for the most appropriate LED solution for your application.  Choosing a LED display partner that will help you understand these factors can greatly save you time, money and headaches throughout the entire process.

Audio-Visual integration firm Think Simple creates a unique 2000-square foot ceiling video display inside the Baha Mar nightclub in the Bahamas using FLEXLite LED

Nashville, TN (5/9/2018) – Heralded as the largest single-phase resort in the Caribbean Islands, Baha Mar offers a choice of three celebrated hotels, a Jack Nicklaus signature golf course, and a collection of lounges, spas, and restaurants. All surrounded by a stunning ocean view casino, the developers of the project also wanted to create Nassau’s premiere nightlife destination, complete with a state-of the-art DJ booth, sound, lighting and video system. Working with the David Harvey at Harvey Marshall Berling Associates (HMBA), the dynamic production design inside the upscale nightclub at the Bond now includes a high-resolution video experience with FLEXLite LED from PixelFLEX™, installed by the A/V integration firm Think Simple.

“When we were approached by HMBA about assisting with the LED video installation at the Bond, we hoped to give the space something that no other nightclub in the Caribbean had ever seen,” began Greg Michelier, Think Simple. “The goal was to add a cool new visual aspect to the Bond, and a ceiling-mounted display is something that would truly set it apart from other venues. It really is a unique video system that’s now built into the ceiling and the wall behind the bar, using FLEXLite LED to add pulsing, immersive graphics to the driving music of the featured DJ or guest performers.”

FLEXLite LED from PixelFLEX is an economical and dynamic solution which provides both indoor and outdoor solutions ideal for any entertainment environment. With its bright, dense display and high refresh rate, FLEXLite tiles are calibrated directly out of the box to ensure perfect color and brightness. Available in 2.6mm-6.25mm pixel pitch options, the easy access back panels allow for simple on-site repairs without the hassle of removing the entire back of a tile.

Michelier continued, “Although the club can and does use the ceiling to show some video content, it’s mainly used for high-definition visual effects that enhance the music and add to the energetic atmosphere. On the other hand, they then use the LED video on the back wall as an immense visual display for the DJ logo artwork, VIP guest recognitions, and for upcoming events at the nightclub and the resort.”

Now open to the public, the Bond at Baha Mar is fully operation with the 2,000 square-foot ceiling video display, and a 6’ x 17’ video wall above the bar. As part of project that also included the installation of the sound, lighting, and CO2/fog systems, the team at Think Simple was pleased to have the support of trusted partner like PixelFLEX during such a unique installation.

“We were extremely happy with the FLEXLite LED video solution and the project support that we received from PixelFLEX,” added Michelier. “While the quality of the product is really good, it’s the support during the design that really sets them apart. Their people were extremely helpful both before and during the installation, and the guests at the Bond are loving the new nightlife experience.”

“The customization on this project was a lot of fun for our team, from design to implementation to seeing the finished look,” concluded PixelFLEX Senior Sales Representative Will Dickey. “We love seeing the different applications our clients choose to use our products in, and their installations are always uniquely different. Adding a visual element such as FLEXLite LED video into such a high-class, luxury nightclub experience is only going to add to the already booming tourism industry in The Bahamas.”

St. Louis-based event management firm invests in a new rental inventory of FLEXTour LED video for deeper experience behind their corporate, live event and tradeshow designs

Nashville, TN (5/8/2018) – As a full-service corporate event management firm, Fogarty Services takes a custom approach to providing the ideal audio, lighting and video design for any project. Located just outside St. Louis, Missouri, they believe that it’s the guest experience that can truly define the success of any event, and using the latest technology is key to that success. With the decision made to bring in a new rental inventory of the latest in video technology, Fogarty Services recently purchased a FLEXTour LED video system from Nashville-based PixelFLEX™.

“Our previous involvement with LED video was primarily in working with installed systems in stadiums with dynamic content creation through our in-house video and graphics team,” began Roger Leonhardt Jr., Fogarty Services. “This was actually our first step in owning LED video for ourselves for use in a rental capacity, and it was driven by a recent corporate event where we needed multiple displays and media servers. After initially looking at projection, which wouldn’t be flexible enough, we decided to take a look at purchasing our own rental inventory of LED tiles, and the FLEXTour LED video system works great.”

Leonhardt continued, “When we started speaking to PixelFLEX about what we needed, they invited us down to Nashville to see first-hand which LED video solutions would work best for our needs. For the purchase, we did look at two possible manufacturers, but after comparing the product options, the FLEXTour had a higher resolution and NIT rating. Additionally, it was lighter and more robust which is a distinct advantage in a rental application. We have always looked at PixelFLEX as being a leader in LED video innovation, and when comparing side-by-side with other options, it was an easy choice.”

Ready to now put the FLEXTour LED video system into action, Leonhardt and the team would be heading southwest for a large corporate event. Wanting to push their own levels of creativity, they were able to develop an LED video design unlike any they had done before.

“Our project in Arizona was an employee recognition program and we really wanted to give the event the feel of a Disney theme park experience,” explained Leonhardt. “To create the setting, we had the guests first enter through an LED archway that led into the main ballroom. Once inside, we built a radial-display structure with 14 LED video towers that were two tiles wide and seven tiles tall. In between the towers, we had three, large-format 9×16 video screens with edge-to-edge, borderless content. With the theatre-style seating, the system wrapped around their peripheral vision, and then using the addition of surround-sound and enhanced lighting, we created a very immersive audience experience with FLEXTour LED.”

As a modular rental solution, Fogarty Services now has the opportunity to offer their clientele the possibility of an LED video design for any occasion. In a broad spectrum of design possibilities, the technology must to be able to perform time-after-time, no matter what the circumstances might be.

“We see a lot of potential for the FLEXTour LED video system in the corporate, live event, and tradeshow markets, and we have also invested in portable truss structures that will allow us to deploy LED video anywhere, regardless of house rigging capabilities,” added Leonhardt. “I really like how the hardware of the FLEXTour system is well-made and precise, and with its IP65-rating, we can also take our events outside. It’s stout and you know it’s going to hold up.”

Making an investment in a new technology often requires a new partnership as well. Since you are not only investing in the product performance, but also the manufacturer support behind it, success must be seen as a mutually beneficial endeavor.

“The support you receive from PixelFLEX is fantastic,” concluded Leonhardt. “They take the time to show you how the technology performs and assist in all facets of the design-build process. There really is no other place where we will get that type of partnership, and we really appreciate their dedication to making our business a success.”

How can retailers capitalize on passersby and heavy foot traffic? The answer for most of the lifespan of retail has been signage. In the modern world, that signage is now digital. However, there hasn’t always been a viable solution due to natural light. For window digital displays, there have been two major concerns: Can the digital signage compete with direct sun? and How can they be installed to not impede natural light from flowing into the space?

That’s the quandary that faced one of the world’s most celebrated retail brands, Levi Strauss. Their flagship store on Market Street in San Francisco sees a tremendous amount of foot traffic. They wanted to capitalize on this with dynamic content powered by digital signage. Transparent LED displays were the solution that answered all their concerns.

What is transparent LED digital signage?

The descriptor transparent is used because the display is a glass window integrated with a touchscreen, allowing for light to pass through in both directions. This is different than standard screens, which have backlit components that illuminate the pixels on the screen. This creates visibility for viewers. For the screens to be transparent and allow the dual light pass through, an alternate light source is used that does not block the display. These transparent LED displays also have lower power consumption, consuming roughly 10 percent of the power of a traditional display. The screens have transparent components such as cathode, anode and substrate. They are designed ultra-thin and are more flexible in comparison to other screens.

Transparent LEDs also allow for 3-D content, which has become a sought-after feature for retailers. When brands can use 3-D advertisements, it changes the way in which they can communicate ideas and engage with users. These displays also offer tools for easy communication, delivering a positive customer experience.

What problems do transparent LED displays solve?

  • Smaller space requirements do to slim footprint and no need for external rigging structures
  • Eliminates the need for additional lighting behind display due to 6-80% light transparency through the screen vs traditional LED video walls
  • Displays can be customized to fit existing window frame openings and structures
  • Eliminates traditional signage that blocks light and valuable window front
  • Reduces labor for content renewal or traditional signage

Potential Applications of Transparent LED Displays

With recent advances in non-traditional LED displays, Transparent screens have opened up new opportunities to place digital signage in places most people would not have in the past. Transparent displays integrate seamlessly into architectural facades bringing digital media to the forefront of design. With Urban development booming, you can create anchor piece to large window fronts in retail, landmark buildings, public venues, hotels, airports and much more.

How Levi Used Transparent LEDs

Transparent screens have varied uses, depending on your goals and what type of experience you want to create. For the Levi storefront installation, the first challenge to overcome was the natural light that was flowing through the windows. Levi wanted to counter the light, so it didn’t interfere with view ability, while also allowing the natural light into the space. When they came to PixelFLEX with their ideas, we immediately recommended FLEXClear, which is a 65 to 75 percent transparent LED display. The ability for the FLEXClear to remove hurdles related to natural light made it an optimal choice. The direct sunlight and ambiance were no longer an issue. The FLEXClear solution actually leveraged these issues, turning them into assets.

The Levi flagship store, on famed Market Square in San Francisco, enjoys a steady stream of foot traffic. The goal was to turn window shoppers into in-store shoppers. With its outward facing windows, the storefront was ideal for the FLEXClear solution. The completed project offered dynamic content that is vivid and visible to passersby, while also allowing natural light to stream into the store.
