VP of Digital Experience John Downie uses 3.9mm FLEXLite NXG to deliver a custom, free-flowing digital display inside the new University of Minnesota Athletes Village

Nashville, TN (8/13/2018) – At the grand opening of their 338,000-square foot, $166 million Athletes Village, the University of Minnesota has ushered in a bright new chapter in the history of their Athletics program. Consisting of three new buildings, the University wanted to create a memorable experience for their recruits, fans and their 700 student-athletes. Looking for a dynamic visual environment, which included the creation of their Letterwinner tribute, the University called upon the experiential design specialists at Advent who installed an immersive LED video display using 3.9mm FLEXLite NXG from PixelFLEX™.

“The overall vision was to create a unique digital experience inside the new University of Minnesota Athletes Village with slightly different approaches in a few key locations,” began John Downie, VP of Experience, Advent. “For the Football Hall of Fame area, we used the LED video in a very targeted way to create a custom and highly-impactful display using the FLEXLite NXG technology which recognizes all Letterwinner student athletes in the football program.”

With fully front-serviceable video panels, plus seamless right-angle corner capabilities, FLEXLite NXG is one of the highest resolution LED video displays on the market today. Available in 2.6-6.25mm pitch options, plus a 6.25mm full outdoor IP65 version as well, the FLEXLite NXG 500mm x 500mm video tiles are calibrated directly out of the box to ensure perfect color and brightness to help realize the full potential of any LED video design.

“We wanted to immerse the visitors in the story by creating it in an unexpected way that honored these individuals and fit into the modern look and feel of the space,” continued Downie. “To do this, we decided to create an angled LED wall that would transition the visitors from a passive observer of the story, into something that was much more dynamic as we enveloped them in the LED video experience.”

Having worked with a number of Universities to enhance the energy around their Athletics programs, Advent understands the need to give each design its own unique, visual impact. By incorporating both the brand identity the story behind the program, the Advent team is able to capture those moments through the use of the latest technologies available.

“We really try to inject a sense of action and energy into the environment and we always try to do things in ways that are unexpected,” admitted Downie. “This was a completely custom-design where we started by understanding exactly what the story should be, and then how we can express that story in a way that is both meaningful and faithful to the University brand. We then have to look at what is viable in terms of technology in order to express that story, and the PixelFLEX technology really helped us realize this idea.”

Ready to begin the installation of the Letterwinner tribute, Downie needed to find a way to create a seamless, digital display which could fly over the heads of the visitors. Using both the die-cast aluminum frame of the FLEXLite NXG, along with a Unistrut framing system, the design was able to come together in a free-flowing visual design.

“To create the angled display, we used Unistrut which was locked onto a plywood backer on both the ceiling and on the wall,” explained Downie. “On the ceiling portion, we used a top row of angled Unistrut brackets and two rows of turnbuckles to lower down the second half of the ceiling-mounted panels. This allowed us to get a perfect joint between the two sections of the LED video wall and it looks great.”

With the installation drawing to a close, the University prepared to begin populating the display with the names of those to be honored. In a program where the number of Letterwinners is expected to continue to grow, the University also implemented the custom Content Management System created by Advent.

“For control of these types of digital environments, we offer a very advanced digital signage scheduling package that gives the client a single point of content management, with technical support and maintenance monitoring,” added Downie. “Through our system, they have complete control over the content they wish to display, and it allows them to simply update any athlete names needed as they add more content.”

Now complete, the University of Minnesota unveiled their new Athletes Village, ready to heighten the experience behind being both a Golden Gopher student-athlete and fan. In a world where the dependence and expectations of digital elements are increasing, Downie is conscious to also remain focused on the University’s return on experience, to guide the continued success of the design.

“In a space that is public-facing, digital video gives the design a ‘wow’ factor, and when implemented well, should be able to provide meaningful statistics on the success of the displays through their interactive digital points,” concluded Downie. “The power to real-time measure the experience and implementation of the digital elements allows us to monitor the usage so that we can more effectively control the conversation around what is the return on experience.  There is great value in being able to better understand how a diverse audience interacts with a space, and digital video gives a University the ability to create a moment that is truly memorable; especially when talking to younger audiences who expect digital touch points.”

Digital signage plays a significant role in how audiences receive information. It can inform, engage, and persuade. That’s especially true at the airport. Digital signage in airports isn’t new, but it has evolved from being ill-designed lists of arrivals and departures. Now, LED displays are everywhere. Let’s look at how airports are using LED digital signage to improve the passenger experience:

Wayfinding

Getting lost in an airport is rather easy and usually increases in large airports. Many flyers won’t have intimate knowledge of that airport’s layout. So, they’ll need some help. Navigating with LEDs over paper has several advantages.

Not only can wayfinding help passengers get from gate to gate, it can also be changed at any time to correlate with any closings of areas or the need to re-route. This keeps passengers moving in the right direction.

Emergency Information

Should an event occur, weather-related or any other emergency situation, you need to disperse information quickly and accurately. Directing passengers to where they need to go with the help of LED displays. This can keep crowds calm while informing them of what to do next. Because your signs can be updated at any time and across all screens in a network, you have a flexible, adaptable channel.

Entertainment

LED digital signage also offers entertainment for passengers. It can include news headlines, sports scores, entertainment news, and more. You may see these live feeds in certain sections of the screen rather than the whole screen. Because digital signage design has become very adaptable, the top half of the LED display could be playing promotions, while real-time content flows at the bottom.

Advertising: Internal and External

One of the most often used capabilities of LED digital signage in airports is to advertise, which could include internal or external clients.

For internal advertising, groups of digital signage in the terminal may communicate what the dining options are throughout the airport as well as retailers. This can work on the passenger’s impulse purchasing decisions. In fact, according to Digital Signage Today, 42 percent of passengers were more likely to make an impulse purchase when businesses promoted duty-free items.

Externally, it makes sense to offer screen time to local businesses, especially restaurants, hotels, transportation, and attractions. This type of signage is most likely found in the path of arrivals and sits prominently at the baggage claim. Offering this ad space is the same thing airports have done for years with banners and static signage.

LED Digital Signage as Art

One emerging trend is the use of digital signage as art. These have been made even more alluring with LED video walls that can bend and wrap. Airports can deliver a more upscale experience. Plus, the “art” can change out regularly based on season or events. It could also be tied into advertisements with internal and local businesses.

Use Unique Screens for Unique Experiences

There is a lot of waiting at the airport with a large audience, which pays attention to LED screens now more than ever. Much of this is due to the new applications and dynamic content. To create these experiences, a new breed of display is necessary, which is exactly what PixelFLEX delivers. The FLEXUltra is a cutting-edge curve-able display that can fit any spot, and the FLEXMod can flex, bend and blend in with any space seamlessly.

Live event and production management firm invests in a robust and high-resolution FLEXTour LED video system to meet the changing demands of their clientele

Nashville, TN (6/12/2018) – Specializing in live production and event management, Mountain View Staging (MVS) is an industry leader in creating innovative events focused on the attendee experience. Dedicated to using the latest technology to provide a compelling and memorable platform of audience interactivity, MVS began to look at a LED video option that would allow them to display high-resolution presentations. Also needing a durable and proven technology that could withstand the challenges of live event production, they decided upon a FLEXTour LED video solution from Nashville-based PixelFLEX™.

“We have been in business for 18 years and have been using LED products for the last 10,” began Peter Johnson, Mountain View Staging CEO and Owner. “Since LED now rivals projection, we have switched priorities to the new technology to keep up with changing demand from our clients. It’s all about the increased resolution, contrast, dynamic range and image quality, and the FLEXTour solution checked all the boxes for our priorities.”

A robust, high-definition and curve-able LED video display, FLEXTour is designed specifically for the rigorous demands of live entertainment productions. With its unique rigging capabilities that allow for traditional and off-set configurations, each 500mmx500mm tile is fully front-serviceable and its integrated climbing ladder allows for quick access to displays flown high overhead. Built with the highest standard in components including the new NovaStar A8s receiving card, FLEXTour is completely flicker-free making it one of the premier LED video design solutions available today.

Johnson continued, “Since we mostly work with tech companies, the ability to display software demos with sharp text and graphic elements was a high priority. When you look at the FLEXTour panels and the way they are built, including the design of the locking mechanisms and the LED pixels themselves, it is clearly a superior product. Additionally, the support and service we receive from PixelFLEX is outstanding, and that was the real deal-maker in this decision.”

With the FLEXTour LED video solution now in stock, MVS was ready to deploy the technology in its initial rental application. Asked to produce a compelling three-day client event in California, the design team would be able to create the ideal display for a successful product launch.

“We deployed the FLEXTour panels in a curved setup for the first time at the Event Marketer Summit in support of Opus Agency and their launch of a new mobile app for live streaming video sharing,” explained Johnson. “This was during the annual Ex Awards at the Historic Warfield Theater in San Francisco. The juxtaposition of the brand-new, high-tech FLEXTour LED wall in this old historic theater really made the experience memorable for three separate events back-to-back, including an executive summit, the Ex Awards and the EMS general session the next day.”

In the fast-paced world of live production, MVS believes that an event company is only as good as the people behind it. Applying that same philosophy to its technology partners as well, Johnson is excited to be joining the growing PixelFLEX rental partner network.

“The LED market can be frustrating to get into but PixelFLEX has a quality product at a good price point with the service and support to match,” concluded Johnson. “That is rare to find all those things together in one product from other brands, and there is absolutely no question that we would make the same decision again.”

Digital media solutions provider Reflect creates two retrofitted, window video displays for the San Francisco flagship retail location using FLEXClear transparent LED

Nashville, 5/29/18 – Originally established in 1853, Levi Strauss & Co. is one of the world’s largest apparel companies with 500 stores worldwide, and products available in over 100 countries. At their flagship retail location on Market and 4th Street in San Francisco, the Levi’s® brand managers wanted to heighten the consumer engagement for the 8000-square foot retail space located one of the world’s most highly visited shopping areas. With two large windows looking out onto the busy street, Levi’s worked with their longtime digital partner Reflect, who installed two FLEXClear transparent LED video displays from PixelFLEX.

“Levi’s has been a client of ours for many years dating back to about 2013,” began Brandie Perkins, Senior Account Manager, Reflect. “As a forerunner in the jean industry, they haven’t always played a lot in the digital space, but for their San Francisco Market Street location, they really wanted to make a statement and connect with their customers. Having seen the possibilities of a transparent LED video display at a tradeshow, they asked us if we could implement the technology into their retail design, so we reached out to PixelFLEX about the FLEXClear LED video.”

As a 65-75% transparent LED display, FLEXClear gives designers the ability to offer a truly dynamic experience for consumers. Through its slim, attractive design and its high LED brightness, FLEXClear is perfect for any retail, hotel, shopping mall, or commercial application. With a 100,000-hour LED life and an IP44 rating, FLEXClear installation is quick and easy using spring-loaded Cam Locks for panel interlocking and offers easy back access for any service needs.

Perkins continued, “They wanted to install a big experience and attract consumer attention without impeding the natural light that comes into the store. With the way the store is physically laid out, the natural light is essential to the space, so they loved the idea of being able to put in a transparent LED display. This way they could still get light into the store without blocking any sightlines, and still make an impactful statement through the content on the screen.”

Having been in the space since 2013, the project would entail a retrofit installation for the FLEXClear LED system. Needing to work within the existing infrastructure of the building, it was the design characteristics of the FLEXClear LED which kept the project on schedule through simple installation and programming.

“As far as mounting goes, the design was quite ideal,” added Perkins. “After removing the old tracks lights which were used to light mannequins in the windows, we installed two separate FLEXClear LED video displays, one in each front window, that each included 30 total tiles. They are mounted to a rod hanging from the ceiling, and we are using our ReflectView CMS to push the content we create to the displays. We use a lot of videos and motion graphics, and take advantage of having an unlimited edge on the screens where we can simply display something like the Levi’s logo, and then everywhere else the LED’s are black allowing customers to see into the store.”

As the installation drew to a close, the FLEXClear LED system immediately began to draw attention. While successfully capturing the focus of consumers passing by, the system went a bit further, capturing the attention of the other retailers who were curious to find out about the unique design solution.

“After we got the system up and running, Levi’s informed us that other retailers on Market Street began commenting on the screen and were very interested in how the technology worked,” concluded Perkins. “At this year’s Digital Signage Expo, we had the same experience where various retailers came to our booth to speak about the installation and the potential of FLEXClear LED. We are seeing a lot of excitement about its possibilities because it’s a dynamic and impactful visual display that doesn’t impede light or customer sightlines, all at an affordable price point.”

Audio-Visual integration firm Think Simple creates a unique 2000-square foot ceiling video display inside the Baha Mar nightclub in the Bahamas using FLEXLite LED

Nashville, TN (5/9/2018) – Heralded as the largest single-phase resort in the Caribbean Islands, Baha Mar offers a choice of three celebrated hotels, a Jack Nicklaus signature golf course, and a collection of lounges, spas, and restaurants. All surrounded by a stunning ocean view casino, the developers of the project also wanted to create Nassau’s premiere nightlife destination, complete with a state-of the-art DJ booth, sound, lighting and video system. Working with the David Harvey at Harvey Marshall Berling Associates (HMBA), the dynamic production design inside the upscale nightclub at the Bond now includes a high-resolution video experience with FLEXLite LED from PixelFLEX™, installed by the A/V integration firm Think Simple.

“When we were approached by HMBA about assisting with the LED video installation at the Bond, we hoped to give the space something that no other nightclub in the Caribbean had ever seen,” began Greg Michelier, Think Simple. “The goal was to add a cool new visual aspect to the Bond, and a ceiling-mounted display is something that would truly set it apart from other venues. It really is a unique video system that’s now built into the ceiling and the wall behind the bar, using FLEXLite LED to add pulsing, immersive graphics to the driving music of the featured DJ or guest performers.”

FLEXLite LED from PixelFLEX is an economical and dynamic solution which provides both indoor and outdoor solutions ideal for any entertainment environment. With its bright, dense display and high refresh rate, FLEXLite tiles are calibrated directly out of the box to ensure perfect color and brightness. Available in 2.6mm-6.25mm pixel pitch options, the easy access back panels allow for simple on-site repairs without the hassle of removing the entire back of a tile.

Michelier continued, “Although the club can and does use the ceiling to show some video content, it’s mainly used for high-definition visual effects that enhance the music and add to the energetic atmosphere. On the other hand, they then use the LED video on the back wall as an immense visual display for the DJ logo artwork, VIP guest recognitions, and for upcoming events at the nightclub and the resort.”

Now open to the public, the Bond at Baha Mar is fully operation with the 2,000 square-foot ceiling video display, and a 6’ x 17’ video wall above the bar. As part of project that also included the installation of the sound, lighting, and CO2/fog systems, the team at Think Simple was pleased to have the support of trusted partner like PixelFLEX during such a unique installation.

“We were extremely happy with the FLEXLite LED video solution and the project support that we received from PixelFLEX,” added Michelier. “While the quality of the product is really good, it’s the support during the design that really sets them apart. Their people were extremely helpful both before and during the installation, and the guests at the Bond are loving the new nightlife experience.”

“The customization on this project was a lot of fun for our team, from design to implementation to seeing the finished look,” concluded PixelFLEX Senior Sales Representative Will Dickey. “We love seeing the different applications our clients choose to use our products in, and their installations are always uniquely different. Adding a visual element such as FLEXLite LED video into such a high-class, luxury nightclub experience is only going to add to the already booming tourism industry in The Bahamas.”

St. Louis-based event management firm invests in a new rental inventory of FLEXTour LED video for deeper experience behind their corporate, live event and tradeshow designs

Nashville, TN (5/8/2018) – As a full-service corporate event management firm, Fogarty Services takes a custom approach to providing the ideal audio, lighting and video design for any project. Located just outside St. Louis, Missouri, they believe that it’s the guest experience that can truly define the success of any event, and using the latest technology is key to that success. With the decision made to bring in a new rental inventory of the latest in video technology, Fogarty Services recently purchased a FLEXTour LED video system from Nashville-based PixelFLEX™.

“Our previous involvement with LED video was primarily in working with installed systems in stadiums with dynamic content creation through our in-house video and graphics team,” began Roger Leonhardt Jr., Fogarty Services. “This was actually our first step in owning LED video for ourselves for use in a rental capacity, and it was driven by a recent corporate event where we needed multiple displays and media servers. After initially looking at projection, which wouldn’t be flexible enough, we decided to take a look at purchasing our own rental inventory of LED tiles, and the FLEXTour LED video system works great.”

Leonhardt continued, “When we started speaking to PixelFLEX about what we needed, they invited us down to Nashville to see first-hand which LED video solutions would work best for our needs. For the purchase, we did look at two possible manufacturers, but after comparing the product options, the FLEXTour had a higher resolution and NIT rating. Additionally, it was lighter and more robust which is a distinct advantage in a rental application. We have always looked at PixelFLEX as being a leader in LED video innovation, and when comparing side-by-side with other options, it was an easy choice.”

Ready to now put the FLEXTour LED video system into action, Leonhardt and the team would be heading southwest for a large corporate event. Wanting to push their own levels of creativity, they were able to develop an LED video design unlike any they had done before.

“Our project in Arizona was an employee recognition program and we really wanted to give the event the feel of a Disney theme park experience,” explained Leonhardt. “To create the setting, we had the guests first enter through an LED archway that led into the main ballroom. Once inside, we built a radial-display structure with 14 LED video towers that were two tiles wide and seven tiles tall. In between the towers, we had three, large-format 9×16 video screens with edge-to-edge, borderless content. With the theatre-style seating, the system wrapped around their peripheral vision, and then using the addition of surround-sound and enhanced lighting, we created a very immersive audience experience with FLEXTour LED.”

As a modular rental solution, Fogarty Services now has the opportunity to offer their clientele the possibility of an LED video design for any occasion. In a broad spectrum of design possibilities, the technology must to be able to perform time-after-time, no matter what the circumstances might be.

“We see a lot of potential for the FLEXTour LED video system in the corporate, live event, and tradeshow markets, and we have also invested in portable truss structures that will allow us to deploy LED video anywhere, regardless of house rigging capabilities,” added Leonhardt. “I really like how the hardware of the FLEXTour system is well-made and precise, and with its IP65-rating, we can also take our events outside. It’s stout and you know it’s going to hold up.”

Making an investment in a new technology often requires a new partnership as well. Since you are not only investing in the product performance, but also the manufacturer support behind it, success must be seen as a mutually beneficial endeavor.

“The support you receive from PixelFLEX is fantastic,” concluded Leonhardt. “They take the time to show you how the technology performs and assist in all facets of the design-build process. There really is no other place where we will get that type of partnership, and we really appreciate their dedication to making our business a success.”

While there’s still nothing quite like watching your favorite team in person, home entertainment systems are getting pretty close. With wider screens and surround sound, some fans may be tempted to stay in for the night rather than fight for parking downtown. Sports venues are no longer able to rely on the game itself to draw in crowds. Instead, the fan experience has taken center stage. By utilizing cutting edge LED technology, stadiums can offer fans an immersive, multimedia experience. Creating an engaging and vibrant culture around the game through the use of LED screens is a great way to keep fans coming back time and time again.

We’re not just talking about the jumbotron. Everything from improving architectural aesthetic to providing an easy to use tool to guide fans through the venue can be achieved through the use of LEDs. Imagine walking into an arena for the first time, but instead of merely filing through security, you are surrounded by a hallway made entirely of screens showing the season’s highlights, past triumphs or an update on other games from around the league. In that hallway, there are even wrapped columns featuring current players portraits, making it feel as if they’re with the fans. It would be an unbelievable first impression.

Here at PixelFLEX, actually built something very similar for the MLB All-Star Fan Fest. Essentially a giant theme park for baseball fans, this event gives fans the chance to meet with their favorite players, watch live broadcasts of sports talk shows, and even participate in training drills. When it was hosted in San Diego, PixelFLEX was tasked with creating an arched entry way into their interactive fanzone. With the help of San Diego based MSI Productions, we developed two screens that were 16 feet high and 25 feet long, arcing elegantly over fans as they walked through. The LED entry way provided an immersive fan experience that many may never forget.

LED screens can be used for more than just entertainment. Bridgestone Arena, for example, turned to PixelFLEX to install a screen above escalators that carry 95% of visitors to their seats. Since Bridgestone is ranked sixth in the world for ticket sales among sporting venues, this screen provided ample opportunity not only for advertisement revenue, but also promotion of their own events as well.

Regardless of whether they are used as maps throughout the stadium, engaging entryways or advertising, LED screens can improve the fan experience, and in turn keep them coming back game after game. As an American-based LED manufacturer with expertise across a wide range of industries, PixelFLEX is dedicated to developing creative solutions tailored to the exact need of any space, be it a conference room or a giant stadium. Nashville, TN (3/27/2018) – Specializing in the design of premiere audio/visual systems, J Sound Services has produced a number of successful integrated solutions for the design-build industry. Recently working with the management team behind the new Top Golf location in Nashville, Tennessee, they were asked to create a custom acoustics and audio/visual design for The Cowan, a two-story live performance music venue. Wanting a high-definition video display to complement the multitude of applications planned for the new venue, J Sound Services installed a mobile and expansive FLEXTour 2.8mm LED video solution from PixelFLEX™.

“This was our first time working with Top Golf, and we were referred through a colleague of ours, Nick Cua,” began Jason Spence, J Sound Services. “Set and lighting designer Chris Lisle, with the direction of Aria Group Architects and Nick, was helping define the experience of the room. From an atmosphere and ambiance perspective, they wanted to have a very industrial looking space, but from a functionality perspective, we knew they would be using The Cowan for touring artists, live recordings, singer/songwriter showcases, and corporate events as well. To create a warm production environment in a stark, industrial room, we paid a lot of attention to the details, which really shows in the design of the FLEXTour LED video system.”

A robust, high-definition and curve-able LED video display, FLEXTour is designed specifically for the rigorous demands of live entertainment productions. With its unique rigging capabilities that allow for traditional and off-set configurations, each 500mmx1000mm tile is fully front-serviceable and its integrated climbing ladder allows for quick access to displays flown high overhead. Built with the highest standard in components including the new NovaStar A8s receiving card, FLEXTour is completely flicker-free making it one of the premier LED video design solutions available today.

Spence continued, “For the LED video, we started by investigating the visual acuity of the space and what content would be shown on the screen. With many types of events, the content would range from full-on HD video imagery to PowerPoint presentations, so we really needed to keep the formatting of the content as simple as possible and we ended going with a 16:9 format.”

With the technology solution now identified, the determination of pixel pitch was yet to be made. On a stage measuring approximately 24 feet wide and 16 feet deep, Spence knew that image quality would be key to the experience behind the video design in the live entertainment venue.

“When we do a video installation, we really try to look at all technology solutions, and when determining the pixel pitch, we knew we needed a clear and crisp, high-definition display,” explained Spence. “We initially looked at both 3.6mm and 2.8mm options and wanting the client to see the performance differences between the two, we went over to PixelFLEX for a factory demo. They set up two walls at opposite ends of the viewing space; on one side was the 2.8mm and on the other a 3.6mm. We all then stood in the middle and it was a pretty quick decision to go with the FLEXTour 2.8mm LED.”

While determining the ideal pixel pitch was a significant part of the technology solution, the functionality of the video system needed to be addressed as well. Since the venue would be used for multiple events requiring various positions of the video system on stage, Spence and his team designed a custom mounting structure which enabled a traveling LED video design.

“In this particular situation, our client also wanted to have the ability to move the LED video screen to various positions on stage for different applications of the space,” added Spence. “To do this, our rigging engineer worked with the Top Golf structural engineers, and they fabricated a beam and trolley system that was connected directly to the building structure. Since the video screen would now be mobile on the trolley structure, we needed a robust LED panel technology that could securely lock together, and the FLEXTour works great.”

Now finished with the installation of the video system, it was time to focus on the backend operation that could provide expansive control options for the design. Understanding that both technical and non-technical personnel would be using the display, Spence designed a comprehensive, yet simple, control system that would allow anyone to quickly get their event going.

“There really is a wide range of functionality in the room from a sound, lighting and video perspective,” admitted Spence. “We have an Analog Way Asender 32 that is feeding the outputs to the sending units, and the inputs are connected to a media server and an auxiliary HDMI TV input. There are also HDMI inputs on the stage and front-of-house so that pretty much anywhere you need to place your source inside the venue, you have a way to connect to the LED video wall. All the switching is done using the Analog Way Web RCS software, and we have a three-camera HD PTZ system as well in case they are doing an event that needs live video. Additionally, if there is a non-technical staff that needs to put something on the wall, we have a Crestron Control system that allows them to easily switch to pre-loaded graphics or connect a laptop to the LED video wall with one-touch ability.”

Completed and ready for guests, The Cowan has begun selling out houses for established touring artists such as the Stone Temple Pilots, George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic, and the Old 97’s. Knowing they had created a state-of-the-art sound, lighting and video design, Spence was eager to see the reaction of both guests, artists and technicians alike.

“The response has been absolutely tremendous, and people are blown away,” concluded Spence. “From all perspectives of clients and guests, people are having a similar reaction where they stop for a moment to take it all in. We were really given the opportunity to deliver something special and watching the reactions has been the best part. It’s been an overwhelmingly positive response and it’s a great system.”

Ponto Solutions Design Principal Matt Abbrederis creates a dynamic, high-definition video display atop the Paris Las Vegas Hotel & Casino with FLEXUltra 1.9mm LED technology

Nashville, TN (3/15/2018) – Located on a 10,000-square-foot deck overlooking the Fountains of Bellagio, Beer Park at the Paris Las Vegas Hotel & Casino provides an exciting rooftop experience. With over 100 eclectic beer options, including 36 beers on tap, the developers of the flagship location wanted the outdoor atmosphere to be a shining example of how to best enjoy the Las Vegas life. In this environment, they now needed a high-definition video display to be a focal point in the dynamic audio/visual design, so they worked with the design specialists at Ponto Solutions who chose a FLEXUltra 1.9mm LED video solution from PixelFLEX™.

“The restaurant/bar design market is a big industry for us, and we were very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with the developers of Beer Park,” began Matt Abbrederis, Ponto Solutions. “They really wanted this location to be a premier entertainment experience through an environment that’s exciting and upbeat. They also wanted to be able to draw people in off the Las Vegas strip, so we put together a complete audio/visual package that would help them accomplish all their goals, which ultimately included the high-definition FLEXUltra LED video display.”

A dynamic, high-definition and curve-able LED display, FLEXUltra allows boundless opportunities to create an unforgettable video experience with each frame manufactured specifically for the installation. Utilizing the ideal tile size for deployment of both 16:9 and 4:3 video ratios, FLEXUltra has a 160° horizontal and vertical viewing angle which offers one of the highest off axis viewing angles in the industry, and the fully front-serviceable panels allow for quick and easy onsite installation and maintenance. With a 3869Hz refresh rate, FLEXUltra panels are now available in numerous pixel pitch options ranging from 1.2mm up to 4.0mm.

Abbrederis continued, “In our initial design concepts, we wanted to wrap the LED video around the entire center bar to resemble the NHL center-ice or NBA center-court scoreboards. Since this was the inaugural Beer Park location, we ended up first installing a 4-panel LCD wall. After things got up and going, they saw the need for the LED video, so we flew them down to Nashville to show them the PixelFLEX technology. Once they saw the FLEXUltra solution for themselves, we got approval to swap out all the LCD panels with the 1.9mm LED technology, and they love it.”

Ready to begin the installation of the new LED video system, Abbrederis knew that the numerous challenges of living in the Las Vegas desert might present a series of obstacles. Wanting to ensure the longevity of the system, they next created a custom enclosure and mounting rack to match the specs of the FLEXUltra LED video display.

“This is an outdoor environment and in Vegas that’s a bit unique,” explained Abbrederis. “You have high winds blowing sand, 120-degree summer heat, spring and fall rain storms, and then it even gets cold in the winter with snow every once in a while. Needing a way to best protect the system, we worked with PixelFLEX and a local fabricator to create an outdoor enclosure, with a custom mounting rack, that allowed us to easily install the FLEXUltra LED.”

As the integration of the new system could now move forward, the goal was to make the rooftop design as flexible and truly unique as possible. Keeping both the experience of the guests and the management team in mind, Abbrederis created an easy-to-use audio/visual package which is conveniently controlled through a handheld tablet.

“The LED video wall is now being driven by a Crestron system which gives us a great level of flexibility,” added Abbrederis. “On the HD LED video wall, we can now use it as one large display, or we can break it up and show up to four different pieces of video content at once. We then have an audio system that can intelligently read the decibel levels throughout the space to give us a nice and even distribution of sound across the entire rooftop with no hot spots. The complete A/V system is then controlled off a tablet that the employees can use to change the channels, break up the video and audio zones, and then also adjust volume in fully integrated operating system.”

In an ever-evolving world of consumer engagement, Abbrederis believes that LED video technology is a key design element for an innovative and modern customer experience. Looking at the technology from both a performance and functionality perspective, he is quick to note its multiple advantages for a more successful and memorable visual display.

“In this application, reliability was certainly the key, and the overall reliability of LED video is much greater than other large format displays,” Abbdrederis admitted. “Additionally, the imagery of the LED video is seamless so that you don’t have varying colors, and the installation is a lot easier because you are essentially using one big mount instead of individual mounting LCD displays. Plus, if one LCD display goes out, you have to replace the entire display. With LED technology, should you have a panel failure, you just pop it out and place in a new one, so it minimizes your down time and you get a better-quality display.”

Ready to now showcase the new FLEXUltra LED video system to the developers of Beer Park, Abbrederis was excited to fully demonstrate how it would enhance the open-air atmosphere. While also understanding that the final result would ultimately be determined by the allure of the system on the guests, he is confident about the lasting effects of LED video technology in this type of entertainment environment.

“Once they saw the result of the new system, they knew why we were pushing an LED video solution in the beginning of the project,” concluded Abbrederis. “The brightness, the clarity and the technology all make a statement in your facility, which customers really appreciate. We started quoting LED video about 18 months ago, and what we have found out is that if you have a high-definition LED video display in your venue, guests are going to more significantly enjoy the experience.”
