What is Digital Signage?

Digital signage is rapidly growing as companies are seeking to take advantage of high traffic areas to connect with consumers. The primary goal behind the usage of digital signage is to enhance the experience for end users. This can be achieved by displaying digital images, video content, or pertinent information to inform, entertain, or educate patrons.

In addition, digital displays offer more flexibility when compared to traditional or printed signage. It gives you the ability to switch or alter the content in real-time. This can assist with displays that are used wayfinding, menus, or personalization.

Digital signage is a broad term that refers to numerous technologies. The most popular technology forms of displays include LED, LCD, and projection. There are benefits and drawbacks to each type of display which we explain below.

What is LED Digital Signage?

A direct view LED display uses thousands of light-emitting diodes to create an image. Unlike LCDs, the LEDs don’t require a backlight instead they produce colored light when a particular voltage is applied to them. Red, green, and blue LEDs are grouped on the panel, creating the full-color pixels needed to produce an image.

LED displays were once a lower-resolution option largely used outdoors, but the development of smaller LEDs in recent years has produced much higher resolutions, including 4K, suitable for indoor video walls.

LED displays are bright, reliable, energy-efficient, and offer the best color accuracy and refresh rates of any display type available today. These qualities make LEDs an excellent choice for large-scale digital displays that demand high-impact visuals.

What is LCD Digital Signage?

LCD, or liquid crystal display, is a type of flat panel that has been popular for years, not only in video walls, but most smartphones, computer monitors, and television screens.

An LCD panel is constructed by sandwiching a layer of liquid crystal between two pieces of polarized glass. Liquid crystal is a fluidly flowing material with molecules that can be oriented by applying an electric current. However, liquid crystals don’t produce their own light, necessitating the use of backlights positioned behind the glass to illuminate the display.

LCD displays are bright, affordable, and reliable. LCD displays make for excellent televisions or smaller format video displays. LCD monitors are not as effective as a large scale video format solution. This is due to the issues such as color matching each display, brightness to combat direct sunlight, and bezels no matter how narrow prevent you from having a seamless display.

What is Video Projection?

Video projection is the result of a projector that receives content from a source and then projects that content on a projection screen or surface using a type of lens system. Video projectors use multiple technologies such as LCD, LED, LCoS, or even laser diodes to provide ample brightness to project an image. Video projectors typically come with settings that allow you to correct any inconsistencies in image quality.

Projection technologies are commonly known for their extensive use in cinemas or movie theaters in addition to other settings such as education and event production. The rise of LED technology has already made in an impact in each of these environments.  In 2018, the first LED video wall was installed and used at a movie theater in the United States. Higher education and event production are significantly further along with their transition to LED displays, due to the numerous benefits the technology provides over projection. In summation, video projection is the most antiquated technology of the three which is resulting in a decline in their usage.

Educators and administrators are aware that students these days thrive in digital environments, and have adopted LED displays and video walls as ways of attracting students and helping them succeed. Digital technology in classrooms allows for a dynamic educational experience and encourages a high level of student engagement. Video walls in advanced libraries and laboratories facilitate collaboration among students and faculty and promote interactive learning.

High-resolution LED screens are excellent recruitment tools. Adding them to campus centers can make schools more attractive in the eyes of prospective students who value technology. They can also transform locker rooms, dazzling coveted sports recruits, alumni and boosters who are willing to generously donate to ensure their team is best equipped to win championships and increase enrollment.

Airports & Transportation

Airports and Transportations hubs have the challenge of needing to communicate to is travelers 24/7. Long gone are the static advertising and TV monitors. With advances in technology and product, these transportation facilities can create immersive, effective and efficient spaces with the use of LED video Display technology. LED displays are enabling signage creativity in new and exciting ways to create unforgettable experiences.

Los Angeles International Airport recently upgraded its Tom Bradley International terminal with a comprehensive multimedia overhaul. This project involved the creation of a multi-faceted modular storytelling experience that included welcome walls, a storyboard, destination board, and “time tower.” Time tower is a four-sided installation that is 72 feet tall and uses dynamic content software to project updates, alerts, and advertisements.

This approach is not only engaging, but it’s profitable. In addition to the cost of traveler inefficiency, digital signage maximizes the revenue of on-site retailers, concessions, or events. Some savvy airports are also integrating text message alerts and campaigns into their operations to capitalize on smartphones. Great airport experiences are about making sure that customers are informed and engaged from the time they arrive until the time they depart.
