With different layouts in every city, airports can be stressful to navigate. This is especially true if you are on a layover and have to get to your next gate quickly. Searching for a sign listing gate information is often difficult, especially if there are none that are centrally located or eye-catching. With the introduction of LED video screen technology into airport designs, terminals across the world are gaining the ability to provide instant, attention grabbing information to the waiting passengers. In fact, a single LED display can provide passengers with dining and shopping information, gates and flight times, interactive experiences and art displays, all while bringing in ad revenue for the airport.

Those waiting for flights are known in the marketing industry as a captive audience. With little to do other than read or look at their phones, passengers’ eyes can easily be drawn to a well designed and deployed LED video display. Be it advertising promoting events and local business in the airport’s city, or even just giving information on the various bars and restaurant options available in the terminal. Traditional printed displays are becoming less effective in an age when everyone is staring at the screen on their personal device. Digital displays have become a necessity to promote and capture the attention of your consumer base.

The technology goes beyond merely displaying images and video, however. Modern displays actually give passengers an opportunity to interact. Particularly effective with wayfinding information, interactive displays vastly improve the overall customer experience. Passengers can plot their own route to their gate or even take a virtual tour of their terminal, learning about the various stores available to them along their route. This level of interaction turns waiting in the airport from a collective, depersonalized experience to one that is very individual focused, making the passenger feel as though their needs are of the utmost concern.

Perhaps the most surprising but most popular up and coming uses of LED digital signage is utilization for creative art experiences in the airport. Because the technology provides the ability to show vibrant, visually stunning content, airports have begun to implement it into their design in ways that are geared towards providing an aesthetically interesting experience to the passenger. In Denver, the airport train takes you through a tunnel decorated with LED lights and hundreds of small propellers. In Miami, international arrivals waiting in line are given a series of creative displays to engage them and make their waiting experience go by much quicker. While their ability to relay information is certainly ideal for the airports that use them, LED displays can also clearly be used for creative endeavors as well.

Whether it’s providing a more visually appealing space or giving passengers access to information quickly and easily, LED displays in airports are changing the way passengers wait for their flights. Billboards have been used for centuries to convey information on goods and services to those passing by. One major drawback to printed billboards, however, is that they require continuous replacement and frequent updating. Their one-dimensional format with minimal contrast can actually discourage visual engagement. Fortunately, as is typical in most industries—competition and innovation have generated improvements and driven quality. Today’s billboards use digital displays LED to captivate passersby. With digital communication as the premier tool for transmitting information and directing social interaction, businesses can more effectively promote their brand by using LED display technologies. As LED technology improves, so do opportunities to connect a proven marketing method with a contemporary digital approach.

According to a 2010 study by Arbitron, LED digital signs reach an astounding number of Americans: 70 percent have seen a digital video display in the past month, versus 43 percent on the Internet. In addition, 52 percent of teenagers and adults have viewed a digital display within the past week, and 75 percent of commuters recall seeing a digital billboard within the past month. Another study found that 63% more people noticed LED signs than traditional static advertising signage and billboards. Following a recent digital billboard campaign, the online platform Monster reported that Google searches for relevant keywords spiked by 20 to 25 percent. It makes sense then, in this context, that dynamic LED billboards ensnare the attention of potential buyers, stimulate sales, enhance the company’s image, and increase visibility to the business.

An estimated 71 percent of consumers claim to view and absorb large format advertising messaging. In fact, those who interact with outdoor advertising are 17 percent more likely to engage than those exposed to advertising on their mobile device. Let’s compare these trends to other marketing channels, such as TV and radio. Marketing through these media has become avoidable and in fact seen as a nuisance to consumers. Consumer marketing needs are evolving as buyers become savvier at thwarting advertisers. By 2020, the practice of ad-blocking is forecasted to cost advertisers and publishers between $16 and $35 billion in lost revenue.

Commercial properties are utilizing digital LED display billboards as another means to generate revenue and encourage business traffic. In most cases these properties are in highly trafficked areas, perfect for engaging potential customers. Brands get in front of many more eyes than would be possible with print and gives commercial landlords a second income source. Areas like entertainment and shopping centers in the downtowns of large metro areas are ideal locations and can reach thousands of people each day with effective LED signage.

Although there are various considerations to make when choosing and using LED billboards, it’s still a great investment compared to static print signage. One benefit of LED digital signage is cost savings over their print counterparts because updates on LED happen in real-time. Changing a printed sign requires time, money, and other resources. So, for technology beyond tradition, LED creates ads that enthrall the senses of the viewer. With LED signage, movement and animation attracts the eyes, giving brands a more impressive stance.

Design Engineer Patrick Sobers and the team at The ESB Group create a new video design on the banks of the Black Warrior River using FLEXTour 6.9mm LED

Nashville, 8/16/2017 – As the largest outdoor theater in Western Alabama with a capacity of 7,470 patrons, the Tuscaloosa Amphitheater is a premier location for arts and entertainment along the banks of the Black Warrior River. Originally constructed in 2010, the amphitheater recently underwent a renovation of their video displays to better overcome the challenges associated with an outdoor venue. Needing a brighter and more powerful solution, the technical team worked with The ESB Group to install a modular and completely outdoor-rated video system using FLEXTour 6.9mm LED from Nashville-based PixelFLEX.

“This was the first time that we have worked with the Tuscaloosa Amphitheater as they were wanting to replace their existing projectors,” began Patrick Sobers, The ESB Group Design Engineer. “During the summer in Alabama, it often doesn’t get dark until about 8:30 or 9pm so the projection system wasn’t able to perform that well, and they couldn’t show content or provide video support during the daylight hours. This was a big factor in their decision to look at LED video technology, and with the FLEXTour system they can easily provide that support during the middle of the day in full sunshine.”

FLEXTour from PixelFLEX is a robust, high-definition and curve-able LED video display designed specifically for the high demands of live entertainment production. With its unique rigging capabilities that allow for traditional and off-set configurations, each 500mmx1000mm tile is fully front-serviceable and its integrated climbing ladder allows for quick access to displays flown high overhead. Built with the highest standard in components including the new NovaStar A8s receiving card, FLEXTour is completely flicker-free making it one of the premier LED video design solutions available today.

Sobers continued, “I’ve personally known the leadership team at PixelFLEX for a while now, and during the bid process we were actually working with them on another project so we knew they would be our technology partner on this one too. We like how their technology has a great reputation in the touring market and as artists come through at the Tuscaloosa Amphitheater, their technical teams will be comfortable seeing FLEXTour on the rider.”

Getting started on the design, Sobers and the team at The ESB Group wanted to not only meet the expectations outlined by the amphitheater staff, but they also wanted to offer a deeper layer of creativity. Knowing the venue would have multiple design needs for the outdoor LED video system, it was the expansive design options of the FLEXTour that made the project complete.

“The design specs we were given for the project had a maximum of 7.9mm as the largest acceptable pixel pitch, so we started speaking with PixelFLEX about what they might have to best fit the design,” added Sobers. “When they came back and showed us the FLEXTour 6.9mm we really liked its modular flexibility, the curve-ability of the LED video tiles and the fact that it was completely IP-65 rated. With its design innovations, the venue wouldn’t have to think of this as the installation of two separate LED video walls, but instead a creative solution to deploy the ideal LED video design needed for any outdoor event.”

With the LED video solution in place, it was time to complete the installation at the Tuscaloosa Amphitheater. Using the existing house steel structure fly bays, the amphitheater also purchased a complete rigging system from Stagemaker to accompany their new LED walls. Using the new rigging, the team was able to easily integrate the FLEXTour LED tiles into the production design, while also giving them the option to be reconfigured and flown onstage, or anywhere else needed.

“For the initial design, we installed the FLEXTour system as two 16×9 rectangular walls hanging house left and right beside the mainstage,” explained Sobers. “We used 30 tiles per wall, rigged on truss and motors, and the system is set up like a touring rig where they can reconfigure as needed and even take it offsite for another event if they wish. They really like the ability to think outside the box as to how they want to deploy the LED video design, and they love the expandability and creativity of the FLEXTour system.”

Now in the midst of a busy production schedule, the technical team at the Tuscaloosa Amphitheater is able to create a myriad of LED environments for the outdoor live events. Needing a solution that offered both design creativity and technical functionality, Sobers is confident the FLEXTour LED video from PixelFLEX will stand the test of time.

“With their busy production schedule, the technicians at the amphitheater actually take down the LED video after each show, but they can have it all back up and running within an hour and a half,” concluded Sobers. “It’s really a fantastic system and when you add together all of the design characteristics, FLEXTour really starts to set itself apart. With its curving ability, ease of rigging, plus the full outdoor IP65-rated aspects with the IP65 PowerCon True1 connectors and IP65 CAT5 connectors, FLEXTour is by far the most advanced outdoor LED video technology available today.”

FLEXTour has the highest standard in components from NovaStar and Macroblock.  The new NovaStar A8s receiving card and Macroblock premium drivers deliver stunning image fidelity, grayscale and flicker-free performance, making it the premier rental staging LED video solution available today.

Additionally, Clearview technology increases the detail level of your video and image playback, providing a much more crisp and clear LED video display.

David Venus, Director of Marketing adds, “At PixelFLEX, many of our team members have toured with some of the biggest musical artists today, so we also understand the need to design an LED video system with the right technical functionality. Technical Director Matthew Goalen uses FLEXLite Plus 3.9mm LED tiles to create a unique, top-hang video experience inside The Bomb Factory in Dallas, Texas

Nashville, 7/11/2017 – As a full-service, live event design and production provider, Goalen Group has produced projects all over the world for a broad spectrum of Fortune 500 clients. At a recent supplier awards ceremony held by one of the world’s largest aerospace manufacturers, the design firm was asked to create an exciting production design inside the newly renovated The Bomb Factory in Dallas, Texas. Being given the opportunity to produce in a state-of-the-art music venue, Goalen Group wanted to push their design to a higher place, so they created a truly unique overhead LED video design with FLEXLite Plus 3.9mm LED video from PixelFLEX.

“We specialize in the creative production of corporate events and have been a long-time supplier for this client at their annual senior leadership meetings and supplier awards ceremony,” began Matthew Goalen, Vice President and Technical Director, Goalen Group. “When we found out that the supplier awards this year would be held at The Bomb Factory, we were very excited to be headed to a fantastic music venue that would give us expanded technical and rigging abilities. With the expanded rigging capabilities, we then decided to turn the design on its head a bit and create a unique, overhead LED video experience using 3.9mm FLEXLite Plus.”

FLEXLite Plus from PixelFLEX is one of the highest resolution curve-able LED displays on the market and is capable of a 15-degree curve in any direction. With its bright, dense display and high refresh rate, FLEXLite Plus photographs and videos extremely well and its tiles are calibrated directly out of the box to decrease failure, and ensure the perfect color and brightness of any LED video design.

“In the past when designing corporate productions, projection was the way to go, but as the LED video technology has evolved in reliability, resolution and cost, it has become much more beneficial,” added Goalen. “Understanding that LED technology is only going to continue to evolve for the better, we are really starting to think outside the box to see how we can push our designs even further. Since we had the technical ability to make this design more of a ‘rock-and-roll’ environment we really wanted to give the producers a truly memorable event.”

Getting started on the LED video design, the team at Goalen Group began with the content that would be used during the annual awards ceremony. With the idea of giving each award recipient their own visual theme, the in-house content development was driven by the technical layout so that all the design elements worked as one.

“A lot of what we do is also about building the video content as well to fully encompass the design we are creating,” explained Goalen. “We knew that putting the LED tiles above the house wouldn’t work unless we had the right content, and at corporate events you have to balance going too far in the production design. We decided to connect each supplier’s award to a series of high res video imagery narratives that would produce a theme specific for each supplier throughout the night, and it was amazing to see everyone connecting with the LED video in an immersive production environment.”

With the content creation now complete, it was time for the load-in at The Bomb Factory, a 50,000-square foot venue located in the heart of the historic Deep Ellum district in Dallas, Texas. Given only a day and half to complete the load-in before rehearsals began, Goalen needed the production design to come together quickly and easily even though they were creating a completely custom LED video experience.

“Having never assembled this type of top-hang LED video design before, we really were reliant upon the crew from PixelFLEX, who were amazing,” stated Goalen. “The biggest challenge was finding a way to connect the panels to the 400-feet of truss in a timely manner so that we could stay on schedule during load-in. Jon Chavez at PixelFLEX came up with a great rigging solution that allowed us to finish way ahead of schedule on the first day, which then gave us the time to complete the minor tweaks we had actually planned for the following day.”

Now ready for the show to begin, Goalen and the team were eager to showcase the design to everyone in attendance. Knowing that this would be an event like none before, they were careful to unveil the power of the LED video design at precisely the right moment so that its full impact could be enjoyed throughout the night.

“We didn’t want to blow the room out with video so we broke the design up into a series of 2 panel x 2 panel rectangular modules suspended over the house where the content would flow through the space in between each module,” concluded Goalen. “When guests first arrived, we had all the tiles in black and then once the ceiling started to come alive, their faces were in awe of what they were experiencing. You could tell that everyone was really engaged with the production environment which made this a very memorable celebration.”

LAX. ORD. DFW.

These codes represent some of the busiest airports in America, but they more so represent a massive opportunity. Commercial aviation has already started an industry-wide overhaul of static signage, but there are still key areas where the passenger experience could be improved through better digital signage.

Modern travelers consistently face three challenges that can diminish what would otherwise be a very pleasant experience: navigation, entertainment, and retail experiences. The words “You Are Here” hidden behind a cloudy pane of glass represent a very real failure of signage to help lead passengers to their destination. To make their time before or after a flight as pleasant as possible, travelers must be able to easily navigate engaging content and shopping experiences.

Finding your way around the airport consists of everything from signs on the highway that let drivers know which gate to enter, to touch kiosks that intelligently display terminal maps and public transit routes. Instead of scrambling to find static signs that may be hard to see, or in odd spots, airline travelers will easily be able to locate all important information.

One inherent benefit of this system is that it can be intelligently updated and linked. Traffic, curbside pickup, and even ticketing, can be made more efficient and flexible with bright digital signage. This allows airports to post gate announcements, creative welcomes, and advertisements.

Personalizing the experience of landing in Boston or Phoenix is a fun way to make a first impression. An LED wall, an image of  Boston’s Fenway Park, or a display of the Arizona desert helps immediately relax travelers, while also providing operators with an opportunity to present up-to-date information about exits and gates.

Architectural indoor entertainment LED displays are more than just eye catching. These features can entertain dozens of customers at a time, and may even prove to be navigational markers in themselves!

Los Angeles International Airport recently upgraded their Tom Bradley International terminal with a comprehensive multimedia overhaul. This project involved the creation of a multi-faceted modular storytelling experience that included welcome walls, a storyboard, destination board, and “time tower.” Time tower is a four-sided installation that is 72 feet tall and uses dynamic content software to project updates, alerts, and advertisements.

This approach is not only engaging, but it’s profitable. In addition to the cost of traveler inefficiency, digital signage maximizes the revenue of on-site retailers, concessions, or events. Some savvy airports are also integrating text message alerts and campaigns into their operations to capitalize on smart phones.

Great airport experiences are about making sure that customers are informed and engaged from the time they arrive until the time they depart. LED signs often last as long as a decade and have flexible programming options that can deliver on target content. If you are interested in learning more about how PixelFLEX can support your airport signage needs, visit us here.

It’s late in the fourth quarter and a bead of sweat drips from Lebron James’s head onto the hardwood. The headband that was a staple of his wardrobe for years has been conspicuously absent this season and with the score tied 89-89 in the 2016 NBA Finals game 7 versus the Warriors, the entire stadium can feel the mounting pressure.

Kyrie Irving drives toward the bucket, completes a beautiful hop step with gracefulness not seen in mere mortals, and lofts up a high arching floater. The ball bounces into the basket, and right back out. Perennial 6th man of the year Andre Iguodala rips the ball down and starts the fast break. He quickly flips the rock to Stephen Curry who takes a dribble and delivers a flawless bounce pass right back. As Andre Iguodala goes to lay in what could be one of the final shots of the game, the massive hand of Lebron appears out of nowhere and pins the ball to the glass. The crowd erupts and the Cavaliers regain possession and go on to win the game.

Moments like this are why millions of people a year flock to sports stadiums. The energy of tens of thousands of fellow fans watching their favorite team is an almost unmatched experience. For centuries, these venues have been able to capitalize on world class competition to draw massive crowds.

It is becoming increasingly difficult for even the best sports teams in the country to sell out. Why? Two words: consumer choices.

We are living in what is perhaps the golden age of entertainment. Customers have a plethora of ways they can consume high quality content including cell phones, flat screen TV’s, VR, La-Z-Boy recliners, gaming consoles, and even their local sports bar, just to name just a few.

To create an immersive and successful experience, sports stadiums need an integrated digital approach that brings the game to life, creates additional revenue, and can even potentially affect the outcome. The solution is dynamic LED display systems.

LED displays can impact an arena in the following ways:

Creating New Spaces That Draw Visitors

LED signage can transform unproductive areas into destinations that create very high revenue per square foot. The Miami Heat, for example, took what was an empty outdoor concrete plaza and used digital signage to create the Miami Heat Xfinity Plaza. Using five custom built cylindrical displays, the Heat created an area that now generates profits for hours before and after games. They can even rent this space out separately for an additional income stream!

Increasing Fan Engagement

Did you know that nearly 83% of sports fans say they check Social Media while they are at the game?[1] By offering live feeds of fans posting pictures, videos, and comments on social media, digital signage can be used as an opportunity to heighten the shared experience. It’s important not to forget that chances for engagement are not limited to just the big screen. The reFLEXion model is a portable and customizable display, perfect for a space like the team gear shop.

Directing the Flow of Traffic

LED displays can act as great traffic managers. A clear and bright display is the best way to get spectators to where they need to be whether that is their seat, the restrooms or the concession stands. While they might not know it, fans are there for more than just the game. LED displays can make sure they know about everything the stadium or arena has to offer.

Providing Additional Advertising Revenue

As stadiums and arenas look to diversify their revenue streams, digital display solutions offer an extra opportunity for advertising dollars. Both local and national sponsors can use integrated digital displays to target key customers and offer unique deals.

The driver behind these possibilities is Fine Pixel Pitch technology.

Fine Pixel Pitch technology has an extremely high pixel density, dynamic high-definition display, enhanced brightness, and can be curved for custom or unique displays. The pitch on these screens which can range from 1.2MM – 2.5 mm, allows fans to clearly see displays from dozens of angles and substantial distances. HD video quality provides a high-end experience that trumps any handheld or digital experience a fan might have at home.

PixelFLEX is an AV industry leader that offers three fine pitch solutions that can be customized for a variety of products.

FLEXUltra

These 2mm curve-able LED displays create unmatched opportunities without sacrificing the resolution of the screen. The FLEXultra has a slim design that can be wrapped around curved surfaces and tiled for perfect video ratios.

TrueFLEX

TrueFLEX is a revolutionary product boasting fanless construction. This means that TrueFLEX can be wrapped around anything while maintaining high resolution.

reFLEXion

The reFLEXion LED stand is a plug and play video display designed for commercial users. This stand can be moved throughout stadium spaces to maximize viewer experience and is the perfect replacement for outdated backlit signage.

Sports aren’t going anywhere, but if stadium and arenas want to keep the games as compelling for fans as possible, they must embrace new digital signage solutions. Let our team help you come up with ideas on how to upgrade your visitor experience!

“Over the years, I’ve seen so many different iterations of video screens and within the past few years everything had progressed to the small, lightweight LED video panels,” continued Teagarden. “For our designs, we needed a solution that was durable enough to be mounted on a trailer, but also had the ability to create custom, modular configurations. We also wanted a product that was a higher resolution than what we have dealt with in the past, and it was great to be able to look through the PixelFLEX catalog of products to get down to the precise 8.9mm pixel pitch we needed for our shows.”

As FLEXLite Plus was identified as the ideal LED video solution, there was another characteristic that Teagarden was looking for in a technology partner. Wanting to make an investment in a company known for quality products and support, the industry reputation of PixelFLEX solidified the new relationship.

“In making this investment, I really wanted to partner with a company that was established in the United States with plenty of inventory and a proven ability to respond to any service needs,” admitted Teagarden. “I didn’t want to have to send product overseas or wait for spare parts to arrive from another country, and I knew the PixelFLEX technology has been road-tested over the years so we purchased 70 FLEXLite Plus LED video panels.”

With the purchase now complete, Piranha Productions wasted no time putting their new LED video panels out on the job. Often placed in challenging outdoor and rodeo arena environments, the FLEXLite Plus has performed in every situation and is providing Piranha Productions with the powerful LED video solution they needed.

“Since we’ve taken the new panels into inventory, we’ve had them out on a number of projects and our calendar is quickly filling up with summer events,” concluded Teagarden.  “We love how easy the system is to configure onsite and how quickly it all goes together and comes down. Even though we haven’t had any issues with the system whatsoever, should we need to service the panels, it is extremely serviceable in the field, and it that makes the FLEXLite Plus a quality LED video solution.”
