Technical Director Garrett Hestla relies upon FLEXLite 6.9mm LED video technology to provide the visual impact of an immersive experience

Nashville, April 27, 2016 – Originally founded in 1984, the Bethel World Outreach Church has seen its ministry grow to where they currently hold worship services in six locations nationwide. As part of this growth, the worship family located in Brentwood, TN, recently underwent a building campaign to expand their ministry even further and in doing so they wished to make LED video a part of their worship services. While attending the WFX tradeshow in Nashville, Senior Pastor James Lowe found his solution for the new facility which was FLEXLite 6.9mm LED video tiles from PixelFLEX.

“With our Bethel Build Campaign underway, we were also about to undertake a month-long sermon series where our pastor wanted to show HD video elements during the message,” began Technical Director Garrett Hestla. “This was something entirely new for us and since we wanted to bring LED video into the new facility as well, we started looking at all the LED video products that could really help deliver an impactful message. I’ve known about PixelFLEX for a while and so after our pastor also met them at WFX, we agreed the FLEXLite 6.9mm would be a great solution for our worship services.”

The FLEXLite from PixelFLEX is an economical solution to other traditional LED panels providing both indoor and outdoor options which can be installed and dismantled by one person, making them ideal for the house of worship market. With its bright, dense display and high refresh rate, incorporating FLEXLite it into any worship service takes no added effort, and its easy access back panels allow for simple on-site repairs without the hassle of removing the entire back of a tile.

“With the FLEXLite chosen we got to work loading-in so that we could be ready in time for the new sermon series,” explained Hestla. “We didn’t have a large crew so we had volunteers from the church assist with the load-in which started about 7:30 am. To build the wall, we stacked the FLEXLite tiles four-high and once it was installed you could easily see that we would definitely be able to create an amazing visual experience.”

Now ready for the services to begin, Hestla and the design team began working on the content needed to complete the LED video installation.  As the content was easily uploaded, Hestla was able to see the full FLEXLite wall in action for the first time, and it certainly didn’t disappoint.

Hestla continued, “For the content, we like to use a system called ProPresenter and run a series of motion graphics behind lyrics, as well as show video announcements and use the screen for any multimedia needs of Special Guests speaking during a service. It’s honestly quite stunning to have the content going on behind you 16 feet tall because it really becomes part of the show and everything looks amazing.”

With the full installation now complete, the FLEXLite 6.9mm LED video wall was introduced to the congregation at Bethel World Outreach Church. Watching with joy from the front of the house, Hestla is not only grateful for how the LED wall has transformed their worship services, but also for the support they received from PixelFLEX along the way.

“I really can’t say enough about the support we received from the full team at PixelFLEX who has truly been there for us every step of the way,” concluded Hestla. “In our services, we really try to use the FLEXLite LED wall as an artistic expression. We want to give the worship services a tremendous visual impact, which in turn gives the congregation an immersive experience into the pastor’s message, and its performance has been outstanding.”

Upscale Orange County apartment community installs a custom FLEXStorm LED video screen poolside, high above in the Southern California sky

Nashville, 2/11/2016 – Located in the heart of Orange County, The Marke by Lyon Communities is an upscale apartment community with an edge. Known as one of the most coveted high-end rental residences in Southern California, The Marke offers a very unique window into the world of luxury living.  As a modern and stylish place to call home, the property owners recently wanted to create a one-of-a-kind outdoor rooftop experience for their residents and working with Nashville-based PixelFLEX, they created an extravagant outdoor LED video display that is now the focal point for the luxurious rooftop pool and patio.

“This was our first time working with The Marke and from the beginning we knew this was going to be an elegant installation,” said Jon Lewis, PixelFLEX. “Understanding their desire to maintain a sense of extravagance in the rooftop pool environment, we had to make sure that the product and installation matched the aesthetics of the space, so we decided to create an LED video wall using our FLEXStorm product line specifically designed for outdoor applications.”

Taking pride in being an LED solutions provider, PixelFLEX got to work on the ideal product and design that would bring the vision of The Marke to life. Centered above the spa tub, PixelFLEX installed a custom 17’ wide x 8.5’ tall LED wall using their IP65 rated FLEXStorm SMD LED display with an 8mm pitch. With front-serviceable LED modules, the FLEXStorm is a completely custom LED video solution that can be mounted directly to any permanent surface.

“The FLEXStorm is ideal for any outdoor application with an emphasis on HD image quality and dependable product performance,” explained Lewis. “Due to its custom sizing and pitch options, we are able to use the FLEXStorm to specify and deliver unique and custom outdoor LED video wall solutions, and with its front-serviceable LED modules maintenance is never an issue. At The Marke, the property owners are now able to host events and pool parties while residents enjoy the FLEXStorm from the hot tub, pool or any of the surrounding patio areas.”

To control the FLEXStorm LED wall, PixelFLEX next chose to use their proprietary SU-PRO master control unit. Powered by NovaStar, the SU-PRO is an independent master control with switching and auto-scaling capabilities. The unit offers unparalleled flexibility with its built-in LCD display screen which allows for configuration without the use of a computer along with easy switching of input sources creating less failure points of your LED video display controls. Input sources for the SU-PRO include CVBS, VGA, SDI, DVI, HDMI and DP, plus it offers DMX512 and GenLock interfaces with fiber output and internet control capabilities as well.

“The SU-PRO master unit is easily one of our most user-friendly control products at PixelFLEX,” concluded Lewis. “With its ability to auto-scale all the various inputs, the SU-PRO makes control of the FLEXStorm LED wall simple and easy. One day the customer can be broadcasting HD content directly from their satellite receiver and then with the push of a button they can switch to another input, such as Blu-Ray DVD player, with no concerns over how the content will be displayed.”

Projection Designers Peter Nigrini and Dan Scully, work with WorldStage to bring projection to the original Broadway production using 22 FLEXCurtain HD LED Video Screens

Nashville, 2/11/2016 – A contemporary musical that follows the life of a city planner rebuilding and restarting her life in New York City, If/Then enjoyed a successful run on Broadway and has now embarked on its inaugural tour starring Tony-Award winner Idina Menzel. In preparing the production to travel across North America, projection designers Peter Nigrini and Dan Scully were asked to reimagine the original production with a new projection and LED video component that would allow the tour to maintain the same visually dynamic impact as the original design. Working with event technology provider WorldStage, Nigrini and Scully identified and implemented a unique LED video design comprised of 22 FLEXCurtain HD LED screens from PixelFLEX.

“I have worked with the design team behind If/Then for a number of years, and the idea for the redesign of the tour was really driven by the wonderful impossibility of the original Broadway production,” began Nigrini. “The original design had a large 36’ x 20’ flying, tilting mirror which was absolutely fantastic, but there was no way it could go out on tour. As a result, there had to be a dramatic redesign to create an equality dynamic if much different production. After consulting with WorldStage, we decided to use a combination and video projection and 22 FLEXCurtain HD LED video screens to help replace the mirror element.”

The FLEXCurtain HD is an ultralight, flexible LED wall that weighs 60-90% less than other large LED screen options and is available in an array of custom sizes. Using the PixelFLEX quick-lock system, the FLEXCurtain HD can be easily set-up and broken-down, and it accepts video and photo content from any DVI-D source.

“WorldStage does a lot of work in the theatre industry and we often work with projection designers who come to us looking for assistance in identifying the ideal technology that will most advantageously help them achieve their designs,” added Lars Pedersen, WorldStage Director of Emerging Technologies. “When deciding upon the use of the FLEXCurtain HD, we looked at it from both the designer and production management perspectives, and it was really the best fit for both. On the design side, it had the correct imaging capabilities and was the right size; and then from the production perspective, it was easy to set-up and occupied a small footprint in the truck. It was ideal in all aspects and its working great for the If/Then tour.”

“On tour, the video system (and everything else for that matter) has to load-in quickly and truck space is always a concern,” agreed Scully. “We ultimately chose to use the FLEXCurtain HD because it could handle all the visual design elements, but could also handle the physical demands associated with a touring production while maintaining a reliable performance night-after-night.”

With the FLEXCurtain HD now in the video design, Nigrini and Scully got to work designing the content that would work in conjunction with the HD rear video projection also used on stage.

“As we started to explore the difference between the FLEXCurtain HD LED video content and the HD projection content, we needed contrast,” explained Scully. “While the overhead, rear projection images are very sharp and clear, we are using the FLEXCurtain HD in conjunction with a diffusion panel to create softer images with motion and animation directly behind the performers. A lot of what we have created for the tour is governed by the desire to keep the design aesthetics as close the original production as possible, and the diffusion panel in front of the FLEXCurtain HD gives a wonderful feeling of frosted glass which keeps the actors at the center of our attention.”

With performances currently scheduled through August 2016, the If/Then tour will surely be delighting audiences throughout North America for many months to come. Looking back, both Pedersen and Nigrini are confident that the decision to use the FLEXCurtain HD in the redesign of the original production was not only to right choice, but was also the obvious choice.

“When we first started looking at curtain-type LED products to use, we did not find anything that was truly comparable to the FLEXCurtain HD,” admitted Pedersen. “As it relates to touring productions, the beauty of the FLEXCurtain HD really comes down to how easy it is to set-up and the small amount of truck space needed to transport it. Both of these are a premium advantage for any touring company, and while this may have been my first time working with PixelFLEX, it certainly will not be my last.”

Nigrini concluded, “Long before a projection designer can begin to make decisions on what the video content of a show will be, many decisions have to be made about the type of video products that will be used. If you make the choices correctly, you can really do something beautiful, but if you make the wrong choices, there is no content that will be able to save you. The fact that the FLEXCurtain HD was able to hit all our targets of image quality, portability, ease-of-use, and reliable performance made it an obvious choice for this production, and we could not be happier with the video design of the If/Then tour.”

Brian Worster and Scott Waldrep create a spectacular backdrop for their annual Christmas production using 96 FLEXLite LED video screens

Nashville, 1/25/2016 – Presenting contemporary worship services that are alive with energy and creativity, Church of the Highlands in Birmingham, AL, has grown since its creation in 2001 into a congregation with more than 30,000 members. Currently operating with 12 satellite campuses, Church of the Highlands produces an annual Christmas production designed to bring the congregation together for an evening of song and celebration. With 11 performances scheduled for the production, Experience Director Brian Worster and Assistant Production Manager Scott Waldrep must create a worship environment that embraces the majesty of the evening which they did using 96 FLEXLite 3.9mm LED video tiles from Nashville-based PixelFLEX.

“This is an annual production for the Christmas services and it typically grows a little bit each year,” began Worster. “Since we normally have video elements in our Sunday services, we wanted to incorporate an LED video wall into the Christmas production as well. When looking at the products available, we needed a high res LED video wall to creatively set the scene and tell the story throughout each piece of the service. Plus, it had to look good on camera for the HD camera shots which is why we chose the FLEXLite 3.9mm LED video tiles from PixelFLEX.”

As the largest church in the state of Alabama, Outreach Magazine also named Church of the Highlands the fastest growing church in the United States. So when Worster and Waldrep began planning the Christmas production, they really wanted the LED video wall to act as a focal point onstage that could highlight the musical performances, display pre-programmed video, and also serve as the backdrop while the pastor delivered his message to all in attendance.

“In regards to the LED video wall, we were essentially looking for a canvas to paint on,” explained Waldrep. “We wanted a blank slate that wouldn’t lock us into a particular look or design so we decided to demo a couple of different LED video products while identifying a couple of specific requirements. First, it had to look great on camera because this was going to be hung directly behind our pastor while he spoke and the bands while they performed. Second, it had to be built well so we didn’t see any of the gaps or spacing in between the LED panels. Lastly, it needed to load-in and load-out quickly and easily, and so after all the demos, it was FLEXLite product line that would work best for our production.”

FLEXLite from PixelFLEX is an economical solution to traditional LED panels which can be installed and dismantled by one person, making them ideal for the house of worship market. With its bright, dense display and high refresh rate, incorporating FLEXLite it into any worship service takes no added effort, and its easy access back panels allow for simple on-site repairs without the hassle of removing the entire back of a tile.

“For the load-in we had four crew members from our satellite campuses and the FLEXLite was quite easy to put together,” added Worster.  “The way they connect is both durable and simple, and it didn’t take long for the panels to be ready for programming.”

Waldrep added, “We really enjoyed how easily the FLEXLite tiles locked together and once we got our hang points we were able to quickly get the video walls in the air without having to make any adjustments.”

For the production, Worster and Waldrep created five separate video walls using the FLEXLite LED tiles. With a center wall that measured 26’ 8” wide by 13’ 4” tall, and four outer walls each measuring 3’ 4” wide by 13’ 4” tall, it was now time to fill their blank canvas with the video content desired.

“To give the set a unique look, we decided to break up the LED wall into the five different sections that had automated lights vertically hung between each video screen,” Worster explained further. “Once the LED wall was all dialed-in and gen-locked, it looked absolutely incredible throughout the production. The background was very crisp and clear, the colors looked great, and there was no type of moray effect between the HD camera and the LED wall. There were absolutely no maintenance issues and it really was a beast throughout the entire run of the production.”

Waldrep agreed, “Once we had the LED wall set-up we were pretty much ready to go. We had to do some basic color correcting to dial it in, but for the camera’s we didn’t have to adjust for shutter speed or anything else. With the FLEXLite 3.9mm product our cameras had just the right amount of depth of field and I was very impressed with how sharp and clean everything looked on camera and for the live audience.”

With the Christmas production now complete, Worster and Waldrep were pleased with not only the performance of the FLEXLite LED video tiles, but with the support that came with them.  Having previously worked with the PixelFLEX team on a separate occasion, it came as no surprise that the blank canvas they desired, quickly became a creative reality.

“I was first introduced to the PixelFLEX line of LED video walls during a freelance project and I really like their product lines,” admitted Worster. “They have a great team of talented professionals who are ready to assist with whatever you may need, and the FLEXLite LED video wall definitely brought an intensity to our Christmas services that we did not have in years past.”

“In my opinion, the biggest win for us this year was being able to paint the blank canvas with any graphic design element we needed,” concluded Waldrep. “Through the FLEXLite LED video walls, we painted a church with beautiful stained glass windows, a majestic big city background, and a myriad of colorful motion graphics to accentuate the music and the message which in the end is the true point of the production.”

Production Designer Scott Moore combines 140 FLEXCurve LED panels into a custom video wall creation for World Outreach Church

Nashville, 12/8/2015 – To kick-off the holiday season, World Outreach Church created “Give Thanks”, a celebration designed to repurpose this season with hope and thanksgiving held at the Bridgestone Arena. Filled with inspirational speakers, a musical performance by Martina McBride, plus an energetic percussion display by Stikyard, production designer Scott Moore, Go Live Productions, needed a video backdrop that could highlight the unique performances onstage, but also capture the essence of the message being delivered. So working with Nashville-based Elite Multimedia, a PixelFLEX Rental Partner, Moore created a truly unique video design using 140 FLEXCurve 8mm LED video tiles.

“I’ve been involved with ‘Give Thanks’ for the last three years, and each year the design process is entirely dependent upon what the programming material is going to be,” began Moore. “I knew I wanted to create a nice, clean aesthetic so that when we looked at the stage during the production it really felt like a piece of art. By using the FLEXCurve LED video tiles, we were able to accomplish a beautiful scenic design that accentuated all the elements of the production from the energetic 30-member Stikyard percussion ensemble to Martina McBride and the evening’s speakers as well.”

The Parnelli award-winning FLEXCurve from PixelFLEX breaks all barriers in the rigid tile category through an innovative dual wing curving LED tile. Designed with a 4mm – 12mm pitch that’s ideal for both indoor and outdoor applications, the FLEXCurve exceeds the needs of any live production event looking for a high-definition LED display. Also designed with rigging flexibility in mind, FLEXCurve LED video screens feature easy top-mounting, “Rig and Click” vertical interconnect, hassle-free alignment, plus quick horizontal interconnect and curve setup.

“The complete LED video system was comprised of 22 columns of FLEXCurve LED tiles hanging at 45 degree angles off each other,” continued Moore. “When I was looking at the LED video options available, I really liked the size of the FLEXCurve panels and an 8 mm product would work perfect for what I needed. By having a 30” x 30” tile, we were able to hang two tiles together at a 45 degree angle from one another and then hang the subsequent tiles underneath to create the vertical LED walls. In total we used 140 of the FLEXCurve LED panels and it only took us a short time to install the complete LED video system.”

As with many live production events, Moore and his team would not have the luxury of time when it came to the load-in and set-up of the show. Knowing that a quick deployment of the LED video system would be a necessity, he was pleased to find out how the unique locking system of the FLEXCurve allows for a fast and effortless vertical panel connection.

“Every time we have done this event, there has been another production or sporting event inside the arena the evening before,” added Moore.  “Because of this, we have no way to come in the day prior for pre-rigging or set-up, so we start load-in at 4 AM and we have to be ready for sound check by 2 PM. I needed the LED wall to be quick and easy to deploy, and that’s exactly what we got with the FLEXCurve which was essential to the success of the production.”

With the FLEXCurve LED panels in place, Moore got to work creating the video content for the show working with AJ Morgan using Catalyst Media Servers. Inspired by the custom design of the video columns, they envisioned a number of video mapping possibilities so that the content itself would also have a custom look as well.

“The video content this year was a lot of atmospheric design that we produced out of our stock library,” explained Moore. “AJ really helped us out tremendously with his understanding of SMPTE time code, and we were able to be pretty flexible as to how we mapped the content to the different columns. Throughout the show, we were able to control each column individually or have them work in unison as one which allowed us to really manipulate the video for a wonderfully custom production. For example, with the Stikyard performance, when they were using the metal grinders, we created custom spark content and used SMPTE time code to fire it in sync with the performers on stage and it looked great.”

With the load-in and programming now complete, it was time to kick off “Give Thanks” 2015 with World Outreach Church. Watching from the front-of-house, Moore was not only confident that they had created the true art piece desired, but he was also confident that it was the choice of FLEXCurve LED video tiles that brought the design to life.

“At the end of the day, the LED video columns created by the FLEXCurve looked amazing,” concluded Moore. “While it was initially the size of the FLEXCurve that sold us on its usage for this application, it was their complete performance that solidified the production design. If I had chosen another panel, we would not have been able to create the custom LED columns the way we did, and that would have completely changed the clean and artistic aesthetic that we achieved inside the Bridgestone Arena.”
