Trenton Dick uses the FLEXCurtain HD LED video wall for the annual event held at the Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg

Nashville, 11/11/2015 – As event organizers for the 2015 Miss Florida and Miss Teen Florida pageant prepared to host the annual competition, Trenton Dick was asked to help give the show a fresh look. Since the pageant had been using the same set pieces over previous competitions, Dick suggested the introduction of an HD LED video wall. With everyone on board, Dick turned to Nashville-based PixelFLEX and decided to bring the FLEXCurtain HD video wall into the Mahaffey Theater.

“The full production takes place over a full week with the preliminary rounds, the Miss Teen Florida competition, and then the final competition for Miss Florida,” began Dick. “In the previous competitions, we had used scenery backdrops, but this year we wanted to update the set for a fresh look. As we talked to the event organizers about using an LED wall, they gave us the green light to move forward and so we chose the PixelFLEX FLEXCurtain HD.”

With a myriad of LED video walls available on the market, Dick had been researching the various options for some time. While in the process of deciding which products to use, he took a visit to the PixelFLEX headquarters and found the ideal solution for the Miss Florida Pageant.

“I had been looking at the PixelFLEX products for a number of years as my church is in the process of updating their cameras to HD video and we needed an HD video wall to complement,” explained Dick. “So earlier this year, I went to the PixelFLEX home office to speak with Jon Lewis about how we could use their products in my church, and in the process we started talking about how we could also use them for the Miss Florida Pageant as well. In discussing what we needed, we decided that the FLEXCurtain HD video wall would be the best product for this application and it worked great.”

The PixelFLEX FLEXCurtain HD is a flexible LED wall that offers a variety of advantages over the competition. FLEXCurtain HD panels are ultralight, offer extremely crisp and sharp video and image playback, and 500-square feet can be setup and broken down in under 15- minutes using the convenient quick-lock system.

Dick continued, “For the Miss Florida Pageant used 13 FLEXCurtain HD panels that were placed center stage to create an 8-foot by 26-foot LED wall hanging six feet off the stage. Since this was our first time using an LED wall for the pageant, we wanted to start out with a simple configuration so that the event organizers could get a good look and feel for what it could do. Once we got the wall hung and powered it on, they absolutely loved it.”

Since this was the first time that Dick and his team at the pageant had actually used the FLEXCurtain HD video wall, there was some concern about the load-in and set-up time needed. With a tight production schedule any delays could create larger problems, but thankfully with the FLEXCurtain HD this was never an issue.

“I was really happy with how easy it was to set-up the FLEXCurtain HD wall,” admitted Dick. “For the load-in and hang, it was myself and two technicians and none of us had any previous experience setting them up. While we had a general idea of how they fit together, it literally only took us 30 minutes to assemble and connect the full 26-foot wall. The set-up and tear-down time in my opinion is one of the best attributes to the entire system. It was extremely fast.”

With the HD video wall now in place, it was time to start loading the content which would give the 2015 Miss Florida Pageant a completely new look and audience experience.

Dick explained further, “Since this was the 80th Anniversary of the Miss Florida Pageant, we had pictures of all the past competitions to display, plus we also ran old video clips of the past pageants as well. We then had the graphic backgrounds used in place of the scenery backdrops, along with the standard pageant logos and contest graphics that needed to go up as well. Once we got the content software program loaded, it was a simple drag-and-drop to get all the content layers in place and the video worked perfectly.”

When the final votes were counted, Mary Katherine Fechtel was crowned Miss Florida 2015, and as they watched the pageant draw to a close, both Dick and the event organizers were confident that they had made the right decision in choosing the FLEXCurtain HD from PixelFLEX.

He concluded, “The performance of the PixelFLEX FLEXCurtain HD LED wall was flawless. When it was show time, everything worked like clockwork from start to finish and everyone was very impressed with the creative elements provided by the FLEXCurtain HD. It gave us a completely new show.”

Andrew Siu uses FLEXLite LED video wall to help bring the scriptures to life

Nashville, 9/10/2015 – First established in 2004, World Changers Church New York seeks to spread the word of God through their worship services held at the former Paradise Theater in the Bronx. As the organization prepared to host their four-day Camp Meeting, Andrew Siu and his team behind the scenes began putting together a production design that would give the annual event a contemporary design. Wanting to use an LED video wall as the focal point of the updated design, Siu enlisted the assistance of Nashville-based PixelFLEX to create a contemporary backdrop using FLEXLite LED tiles.

“At our New York location we have an annual four-day event called our Camp Meeting,” began Siu. “For the production design, we wanted something that was different from our regular services which have a more traditional look where we use a painted backdrop behind the speakers. Knowing that I wanted to go with an LED video wall to create the more contemporary design, we started exploring the potential options available to us and PixelFLEX really gave us the best solution with the FLEXLite LED video tiles.”

FLEXLite by PixelFLEX is an economical solution to traditional LED panels because of its bright, dense display and high refresh rate. Additionally, incorporating FLEXLite into any live event takes no added effort due to its unique spring lock guide pins which help align the tiles, plus the single and double panel rigging hooks that allow for an easy hang.

Siu continued, “When we started looking at the PixelFLEX options for the production, we really liked how the FLEXLite tiles would allow us to create a perfectly-sized LED screen to fit specifically on our stage. It also provided us with the perfect rigging options for how we would fly the screens and it all just sort of clicked when we were discussing how we would achieve everything we needed.”

On their proscenium stage measuring 32’ wide x 55’ deep, Siu decided to create the LED video wall using 6.9mm FLEXLite tiles. With its lightweight form factor, FLEXLite can be quickly installed and dismantled by one person, making them ideal for productions where labor could be a challenge.

“The physical set-up of the panels was very quick and easy,” explained Siu. “My team is made up primarily of volunteers who do not necessarily have training in LED screens, but once we explained what we wanted to do and how it would go together, the setup went extremely smooth from beginning to end.”

Now that the 37’ wide x 11’ high LED video wall was in place, it was time for Siu to begin programming the FLEXLite tiles. Working with his PixelFLEX production technician, Siu was able to quickly load all his content in place and easily complete the final design.

He explained further, “During the worship services we used the full screen for banner logos and such, but then we also used the center portion for the IMAG video of the speakers. When broadcasting the speakers, we would use the stage left and right side of the screen to show various graphics of scriptures, logos, or hashtags from the event. With the assistance of our onsite technician, the content was very easy to load and I really loved the content flexibility of the FLEXLite tiles.”

As the Camp Meeting drew to a close at World Changers Church New York, Siu was fully aware of the influence that the FLEXLite tiles had on the worship services. By bringing the scriptures to life, the congregation was able to more completely understand the teachings and that significance was felt by everyone involved.

“Our whole event is focused on the teachings from the Bible, and the FLEXLite LED screen really allowed us to give our congregation a visual reference of the scriptures,” concluded Siu. “With our old backdrops we couldn’t do this, but with FLEXLite we were able to put each scripture up on screen with the simple push of the button.  The LED wall gave our services a very engaging and interactive way for the congregation to understand what the scriptures were saying, and it really made a huge impact on our worship services.”

FLEXCurtain HD LED video wall chosen for their ideal weight, convenient set-up, and perfect pixel pitch

Nashville, 8/20/2015 – Striving to make the undergraduate student experience as fulfilling as possible, the University at Buffalo Student Association hosts a series of memorable events throughout the year. As the organization got set to produce the EDM concert “Electric Tundra” headlined by Bingo Players and featuring 3LAU and DNNYD, the local production staff was asked to create a high-energy atmosphere inside the Alumni Arena, and needed lightweight LED video panels that could also create quality HD projections so they chose the FLEXCurtain HD from PixelFLEX.

“On ‘Electric Tundra’ we had the challenge to present a national headlining act with limited setup time on a small stage with a video wall, all on a tight budget,” began Production Manager, Katie Gilliland, University at Buffalo Center for the Arts. “Inside the 6,500 seat arena, equipment cannot be hung from the roof and we didn’t have time to build our normal ground-supported power system. We needed to look at lightweight video wall options that could be ground supported. It was really the weight of FLEXCurtain HD panels that originally sold us and we were able to create a 20’ x 8’ video wall that weighed only 250 lbs.”

Gilliland continued, “With our limited setup time, it was an advantage that the FLEXCurtain HD panels loaded-in easily, locked together quickly, and then loaded-out just as simple. We had both a student and a professional technician who had never worked with these LED panels before, but they were able to assemble the full system in only a few minutes.”

Going into the concert, Gilliland and the tech staff were familiar with the operation of LED video walls, but they had never worked with the PixelFLEX range before. Needing to make sure they had the ideal pixel pitch to bring their content to life, they worked with the team at PixelFLEX to find the right model of FLEXCurtain HD.

“While this was the first event that used this type of lightweight LED video wall, it wasn’t our first experience working with video walls,” concluded Gilliland. “Our main concern going into the concert was the pixel pitch since our content would be HD and included text. To make sure we chose the right video wall, we worked with PixelFLEX and loaded our content onto a demo wall to create a sample video. Afterwards we decided that the FLEXCurtain HD CCHD-12.5 model would be the best option and it worked great the night of the show.”

175 FLEXCurve LED video screens create a custom stage layout at the K-LOVE Fan Awards

Nashville, 7/30/2015 – Go Live Productions is a complete turnkey concert and event production company that enjoys the challenge of creating a unique live experience for each of their clients. As the longtime production company behind the annual K-LOVE Fan Awards, their desire to make each show unique is often put to the test. When preparing for the 2015 awards ceremony, Production Manager Scott Moore created a custom LED video display that needed a truly unique solution, which he found by using 175 PixelFLEX FLEXCurve LED video screens.

“At the 2015 K-LOVE Fan Awards we really expanded our video components and actually used the LED screens to create a series of presenting and performances spaces,” began Moore. “Going into pre-production we knew that the artists would be excited about this therefore we requested they send us their custom content ahead of time. With only two exceptions, every artist had custom video content so our lighting designer Tony Fransen had a lot of work to do integrating the video elements and the end results using the FLEXCurve video screens were phenomenal.”

The PixelFLEX FLEXCurve breaks all barriers in the rigid tile category through an innovative dual wing curving LED tile. With an 8mm – 12mm pitch that is designed for both indoor and outdoor applications, the FLEXCurve is available to meet the needs of those looking for high definition LED displays while still maintaining the unique flexible characteristics PixelFLEX LED video screens.

Moore explained further, “To break up the Grand Ole Opry stage and provide us with multiple playing areas, the FLEXCurve LED screens had multiple hang positions. We had one large 22.5’ x 12.5’ playback surface that hung upstage center. There were two L-shaped walls that split the stage into separate performance areas that each measured 27.5’ x 7.5’ going stage right to left, and then 17.5’ x 7.5’ running upstage to downstage. Next, we placed a 27.5’ x 5’ wall behind both of the two performances spaces; and lastly, we had a 5’ x 7.5’ wall that acted as a backdrop for the center stage presenters. With so many custom shapes, we had to have LED screens that could quickly and easily connect together, and that’s what we got with the FLEXCurve.”

The PixelFLEX FLEXCurve quick-lock system makes panel connection fast and secure through a simple 3-step process: align, lift, click and lock. Designed with greater rigging flexibility for the rental and touring industry in mind, FLEXCurve LED video screens feature easy top-mounting, “Rig and Click” vertical interconnect, hassle-free alignment, plus quick horizontal interconnect and curve setup.

“As we prepared for the production, we invited the artist designers to come in and sit with us in a 3D presentation suite because we would have no time to program onsite,” continued Moore. “This process is essential to the overall success of the show and since a lot the artists created content specific to the custom surfaces, we asked AJ Morgan from PixelFLEX to come in and help us out. His skills at mapping video and being able to cue a show with multiple inputs to multiple outputs are phenomenal. When he is around it’s a great confidence boost and I’m never concerned because you know the video will be integrated correctly and will look great.”

With the production now complete, Moore is quick to recognize that it’s both the innovative design and the team behind the product that truly makes the FLEXCurve LED video screens a desirable solution.

“I really love the ability of the FLEXCurve LED screens to create elegant curved surfaces,” he concluded. “The method they have of being able to achieve custom angles on the panels is pretty fantastic. I’ve worked with PixelFLEX before and I have found that the dependability of both their products and their technicians is second to none. When we are in a situation where load-in time and onsite adjustments are not a luxury we are afforded, these characteristics are a major advantage.”

FLEXCurtain LED video screen finds a new application on “Brain Games” commercial

Nashville, July 20, 2015 – Working with production company Variable and design studio Meptik, the industry-leading lightweight, flexible PixelFLEX FLEXCurtain was selected for an application beyond traditional video use in a commercial for the National Geographic Channel. Featured as a futuristic, movable environment, eight panels of the PixelFLEX 100mm FLEXCurtain LED video screen were used to create a textured environment promoting the hit show “Brain Games.”

“Our goal for the shoot was to put the host of the show, Jason Silva, in a highly imaginative environment that felt futuristic and scientific,” said Andy Baker, SVP/Group Creative Director for the National Geographic Channels. “As we discussed many different options, I came across some inspirational images online that showcased a ‘light garden’ featuring thousands of LED and fiber optic lights illuminating a space. It was something I hadn’t seen done very much, and the fact that we could use the FLEXCurtain LED screens to become a living, breathing organism that could surround Jason was extremely exciting.”

The PixelFLEX FLEXCurtain is an ultralight, flexible LED wall that weighs 60-90% less than other large LED screen options. Available in custom sizes, 500 square feet of FLEXCurtain can be setup and broken down in under 15 minutes using the easy to setup quick-lock system, and accepts video and photo content from any DVI-D source.

Baker continued, “Jason has an incredible on-camera presence and energy, and we wanted the location and set to sit naturally with that spirit and have an energy all its own. The spot needed to reflect Jason’s natural wonder and curiosity, and give him a visually interesting backdrop where he could do his performance. A static, flat environment simply wouldn’t work and while we traditionally might have added those elements in post with graphics and CGI, we wanted this one to feel more in-camera, so we used the FLEXCurtain LED screens to build a true and tangible world around him.”

To create the shots needed, Baker and Meptik owner Nick Rivero decided to set up the FLEXCurtain in an L-shape with fiber optic lights mounted to the floor. Next they programmed a series of low res animations with the National Geographic Channel logo, plus other background textures such as a star curtain and fiber optic curtain. Additionally, they also used the FLEXCurtain to create an alien landscape with digital textures of synapses.

Rivero explained further, “We got a lot of use out of the FLEXCurtain. Outside of a tour, live event or corporate setting, I think people might wonder why we would use low res LED video, but looking at our environmental concepts we were able to create wonderfully, dynamic imagery. The PixelFLEX FLEXCurtain was cost-effective, easy to set-up, and it worked great.”

Baker concluded, “The shoot looked incredible because the FLEXCurtain gave us so many options and cool perspectives. Our macro shots with the LED light defocused in the background looked amazing as did the wider shots where the curtain played a bigger part of the shot. We were blown away by the final product and the FLEXCurtain allowed us to achieve all of our goals both technically and creatively.”

PixelFLEX FLEXCurtain HD Chosen for Ease of Transportation for Human Nature 25th Anniversary

Nashville, June 17th, 2015 – Chart-topping Australian group Human Nature, one of the nation’s most iconic bands, just completed a sold out Australian tour with PixelFLEX FLEXCurtain HD for visual support on their 25th Anniversary “Jukebox” tour.

“Jukebox,” their 11th studio album, brings the group back to what originally inspired their careers with a mix of songs from the ‘50s and ‘60s. The graphics for the live shows not only tell the story of those eras, but the story of their career.

Doing the tour without a high quality video screen was not an option for production manager David Rudder, but it had to be efficient and economical. That’s where the 16-foot-wide by eight-foot-tall main 12.5mm FLEXCurtain HD wall helped support Human Nature and entertain fans.

“The main driving factor for the purchase was Australia is the same landmass as US, but with only 25 million people, so huge distances are involved when traveling,” said Rudder. “We have shows night to night that are four or five hour flights away, so the question was how do we transport a custom looking show when we have to air freight everything? And in only two 500-pound-road cases we were able to transport our entire video package, get it to a venue midmorning and have it set up 45 minutes later and working. It’s kind of thrilling considering the logistics involved.”

Risers support the main curtain as well with a combined total of 32 feet spanning the stage at a height of two feet. The ease of setup for screens of any size is standard with all PixelFLEX products. Videos and images are sent to the LED screens using any computer with a DVI-D connection.

“We are very much looking forward to having this production asset available for our touring shows here in the U.S., including the upcoming East Coast tour in August,” said Rudder. “Being able to have this level of production value for our video-heavy shows allows us to bring our full show to theatre venues – this was previously either too challenging logistically or unaffordable.”

Available in a large range of pitches, all LED video screens are lightweight at 40 pounds per two-foot by eight-foot panel – 70-80 percent less than most other high-resolution LED video screens on the market.

“The great thing about it is it looks like a hard, hi-res product. Someone who I know in the business in Australia came up to me at the show in Melbourne and asked where we were playing next. When I told him Tazmania, he said, ‘well you won’t be taking the video with you obviously.’ And I said, ‘yeah, I’m flying it out tonight,’ and he commented that I obviously couldn’t be making any money off of it because of astronomical freight costs. I had to explain to him and have him go up and actually touch it to see that it wasn’t a hard video wall.”
